Newsflash

Amber

It has been something of an interesting week for Amber. Sunday she traded odd messages with the woman who is probably her best friend before going over and "hanging out." It was a night of beers, burgers, fries, and Dwayne Johnson movies. And a strange story of commands given and unnaturally followed.

Then she and her other sort of friend exchanged perfectly ordinary texts (which is strange for another reason) and agreed to meet up. More of the story unfurled, was denied, backpedaling happened and this sort of friend nearly left he was that embarrassed. Or worried he was losing his sanity. Or maybe he was afraid Amber thought he watched too many monster movies.

It's another night, and Amber has a brilliant inspiration. Talk to Lux. Find out what can be talked about with Nathan. Either the answer is nothing and she continues to lie to everyone, or the answer is at the very least something, and some of this burden of secrecy will be lifted. Maybe. It's Nathan, after all, and their friendship is still a tentative newly sprouted thing.

She has a number for Lux which she calls, and whether she gets voicemail or the voice of the vampire herself, Amber says, "Hey. It's Amber." In that smoky sultry voice that could be no one else's. "Want to, ah, hang out? I bought a bunch of new cans today and I want to try them out."

Because 'hanging out' for these two can be many things, including marking up the walls of the city, making it a little more beautiful and a little more defiant.

Lux

Lux does answer herself when she sees the caller ID. Amber knows by now that Lux's phone number shows up as x. dubois unless and until Amber changes the name to Lux. The ambient noise has an echoing sort of hush as if she is in some sort of tunnel. If Amber listens hard, she can perhaps hear music in the background - but distant thready music, a man's voice.

"Sounds fun," Lux says. "Just us?" And following a confirmation, she suggests a place where 'new cans' might be tried out. A bridge, maybe, or an abandoned something-or-other in Colfax, maybe even something out toward the 'burbs. Surely there's an abandoned drive-in theater somewhere in this world of darkness just waiting for a couple of artistes to make it an awesome hang-out.

Amber

"Yeah," she says, just the two of them. It was one thing to get Flood out to - wait, get him out to? It was his idea to go to karaoke. But that was one thing and this is another, and while Amber has promised to stay with the Lasombra they still have their separate lives. And this is a thing for Amber and Lux, rebel women in the night.

So, Lux suggests a place. Amber says, "Okay, see you there." And some time later they arrive before tonight's canvas, Amber with a tote bag that clinks a bit with new and untried and untested cans of spray paint. All sorts of colors, at least one that's supposed to shimmer. Not long ago she painted a mural (for money, on purpose) on the side of a store, an image of a face in inhuman colors. Purples and blues rather than skin tones - olive, cream, black. The cans she has are something of the same spectrum.

There are other supplies, stencils and pieces of poster board cut into curves, and scissors in case they need to cut them a little more. Arts and crafts for grown ups.

Amber is there, her lovely car parked somewhere far away from here. She's dressed in muted colors tonight, jeans and a sweatshirt with a bandana to protect her face from fumes. When Lux arrives, the ghoul is there already, crouched at the base of the barren wall that will be their canvas tonight.

"Hey," she greets, and she smiles a crooked smile that is at once intense and happy.

Lux

Lux is in dark colours, too. No sweatshirt but a tunic-y-jacket-y thing that has a hood. The hood's up, but the sleeves are rolled up too, to her elbows, and one arm is encased in cold metal, jagged metal, a stacking-up of handcuffs, chains. The other arm is pale and lovely: the blue fork of her veins under translucent skin a promise. That soon her wrist and palm and fingers will be stained by paint. The tunic-y jacket-y thing is zipped up, because beneath it her shirt's nothing but very fine black lace.

And to meet-up at the place, Lux enjoys going where she shouldn't go. Around that fence. Across that yard. Cut across that roof-top, past that chain. There's a small whumpf before she comes around a corner, passes out've a fall of light and into the dark ambience of their place, when she jumps from a ledge to a dumpster lid's top, and then -

Why then! Hey. Lux is smiling at Amber like [Lux's smile is to People like Fall is to Lucifer: go ahead, baby, you know you're gonna and it's gonna be poetic] she's pleased to see her and she is pleased to see her. That sharp press-together of her lips, surprisingly sharp snick-up of one corner of her mouth: the Toreador's got a certain energy tonight.

She didn't bring any cans unless Amber asked her to, and when she looks over the spread, chin lofting in consideration, she says, "So what the Hell does this wall long to be, really, in its secret heart of hearts? What is our theme?" And she steeples her fingers together on the word 'theme,' holding them to her mouth like a prayer.

Amber

Amber rises and it is not a graceful thing because she is not a graceful thing. She is lovely, but not all lovely things are delicate and graceful. A tiger is a lovely creature and has grace of a sort, definitely, but a tiger is power as Amber is power. Power and speed and stamina in equal measures, with someone else's blood in her veins to give her a little extra oomph. She rises with strength and with power, stands sturdy and strong.

Then she moves. She stands beside Lux and folds her arms as she looks up, head tilted, looking at the grain of the wall and the cracks in its surface. They are hidden from immediate things, but this place is not hidden. Cars can see it from the freeway if their passengers happen to look to the right at just the right time. Right now if a person looks over at the right time they'll see two figures staring at a wall. Later? Who knows?

Amber looks at the wall and she twists to look back over her shoulder at the freeway, cars whooshing past, headlights a blur in the darkness. She looks back.

"Depends," says Amber. "Should it be beautiful art or a big old Fuck You? Or both," she muses. It could be both, the two are not mutually exclusive.

Lux

This place isn't hidden. Perhaps they'll need to run. The thrill of it. Exhileration. Exultation. This place isn't hidden and Amber isn't delicate and neither is Lux a flower but isn't it a shame they're not the fucking painting, those two creatures standing at a wall and contemplating the transformation of it. Amber is taller than Lux is without heels but Lux is almost never without heels so they're standing at around the same height. Tonight the vampire might be a touch shorter. They met when Lux was furious over Everett's loss; when she wanted to say fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you to both the Tower and the Sword. Maybe Lux's graffitti back then makes more sense to Amber now; maybe it doesn't. Lux always wants to say fuck you to the Tower and the Sword, but tonight -

"Let's make something where beauty's the fuck you. You fucking assholes think there's no purpose in it? You think that a thing of beauty isn't a joy forever? That the only thing that matters is going back and forth and moving forward? Think paint's got no power; that it's not going to hold you down by the throat and break your heart? Think it's gotta bleed to be worth remembering? Something like that."

A pause; Lux pivots toward Amber, contained laughter: "So yeah, let's just figure out what that is. I suspect not kittens in a basket. How are you doing?"

Because while they start to mess with concepts, they can also have a conversation.

Amber

Amber does understand that first night better now, and it makes her happier to know. The sword and the tower. She doesn't understand them very well, doesn't understand why anyone would want to pay homage or fealty or take orders from anyone or anything for eternity but then Amber is young. She still has breath in her lungs and blood pumping through her veins of its own accord. And though she may be forever-bound to a vampire, she is still a rebel. She still prefers to fight systems than work with them.

Which is why she feels her heart beating - not faster, no, it doesn't feel like it's racing, it feels like it's slamming, hammer to an anvil. Whud! Whud! Whud! Each beat vibrating her very bones. This is what she feels when Lux speaks, because Lux has the power to move mountains and she has the power to move Amber who is a storm.

Amber nods. "I like that." Of course, it's a theme, but it's not an idea precisely. And maybe they don't need an idea precisely. Amber drops into a crouch to open up that bag and reveal the colors that she's brought, which should help.

"I'm okay," she says, head down as she pulls out one can after the other. Then there's a pause, considering. How to broach the subject, how to broach the subject. Amber's temper is cooled these days, it makes it easier for her to think, and to consider the words she says in order to get what she wants. It lets her calculate.

"I saw Nathan the other day. For a little bit." Dip a toe in, test the waters.

Lux

[Hmm. Percept + Emp. Are you going to ask me if it's okay to date him? Do I get a sense of what this is going to be about?]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 7, 8, 10) ( success x 3 )

Amber

[how nonchalant are you not being tonight, Amber?: manip+subt this is totally cool a normal conversation about whatever man whatever]

Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (1, 4, 8) ( success x 1 )

Amber

Amber is being cautious, because she has some apprehension about this conversation she's trying to delicately (as delicately as a monsoon, as carefully as a tidal wave) broach. But she glances at Lux often, little darts of her eyes hoping to gauge her reaction. Nathan is a person that they have in common but in what capacity? That's what she's hoping to find out, so she is not blushing/bashful looking like she's about to ask for Lux's permission to court the man. Ugh.

Lux

Amber begins to take out the cans. Lux's senses are heightened, are sharp are a whettstone for the night to sharp itself against and she continues to study the wall. Her head canted: just so. The hood drapes gracefully against her cheek, against the corner of her mouth. Darkness and more shadow. Her lashes are long, even without the assistance of mascara, the colour of her eyes just now a tarnishment, an indecipherable thing. Lux isn't smiling though the contained laughter from before is still energy and vibrance in the shape of her, she is a scholar. What does the wall want to be. And then, amid the rattle-roll sound of cans touching pavement and asphalt and perhaps broken bits of micah which would gleam if the headlights reached this far, scrub and abandoned rubber, Amber mentions Nathan and Lux looks over at the beautiful thing, stolid, Earth-made, a gorgeous clay-baked golem for God to put his mark upon. It's not a sluice of a look, but it is absorbant.

Her mouth curves up. "You're not about to tell me he's somehow found himself hospitalized and I do not know it yet, are you? Because if you are, too cruel," and Lux doesn't think that's what Amber's about to tell her. She wouldn't say it like that if she did.

Lux bends to pick over the can-colors, shaking one she decides on when inspiration strikes. "Why don't we cheat and start with doorways. In the almost-center, do you see? But not quite the center, because balance... No, but look. We can make some huge Narnia-looking doorway, through that doorway another one, sort of surreal? And through that doorway -another-, and then just have things coming out of the doors all across the rest... Perhaps to frame it a kickass woman leaning against the side looking out of the fourth wall."

Amber

Amber is not about to tell Lux that Nathan's been hospitalized, although the words of the Toreador give her pause and make her consider. She hadn't realized there was a connection between Nathan and Lux when he was hospitalized before. She doesn't know what it is or why it is - all Flood ever told her was that Nathan was claimed by Lux, all she saw was Lux in Nathan's hospital room, Lux, who looks like she could maybe be Nathan's cousin. Amber just knows that it's there, and now she thinks to file it away, just in case she somehow does discover Nathan-in-a-hospital first.

She shakes her head, because she wouldn't phrase it that way at all if that were the case. She wouldn't be here, wouldn't have waited to contact her, wouldn't have done a lot of things that aren't hanging around the waiting room of a hospital's Emergency Room if that were the case.

Before she can continue along that thought Lux has inspiration. And Amber, rising and taking a step back to look at their cracked canvas, sees it clearly. See's Lux's idea mingled with Amber's own hand. Glancing askance of Lux, Amber imagines working in tandem with the woman. Breathing in deep, she looks away again. She imagines something else. A beauty and a doorway that is a giant middle finger to the world.

They might not have enough paint for all of that, at least not if they want to get it done in one night. Or maybe they'll find a way to make it work. There are a lot of colors from which to choose.

"A woman," she repeats, smoky voice low. "In armor that's a little busted, because it's not safe." And because Narnia and the elves of Tolkien and fantasy. "But she's taken off her helmet." Turning her head, she looks at Lux, whose face is shadowed by her hood. "Because she doesn't need to be protected. That sort've thing."

Lux

Perfectionism. Lux. A pause, and then a nod. "Armor that's a little busted because it's not safe," musing. Mused. Muse. "I like it."

"I'm going to start here," she touches the wall with her boot, claiming an initial patch. A firm touch; the sound of it has her so still, just after. The sound of façade holding strong, but behind there is a mark. They might not finish tonight, but so what? There's always the next night, or the night after that, or the night after that. Forever's a long time. The can she has plucked is some dark purple for a base. They'll probably only have time to get an idea of the thing, to paint one or two 'effects.' Lux, she's thinking clouds, she's thinking tendrils; she's thinking abyssal twists of darkness, stretching, she's thinking -

there's a bit of a wind. She pushes her hood back. "So..."

Invitational; go on. Her voice; it's like the feel of silk, lover-warmed; a fall of shadow on that silk.

"You saw Nathan the other day."

Lux can talk while she works.

Amber

Lux is going to start over there, then Amber will start over here. She plucks a can from the ground, looks at it, considers it and then the wall and then Lux's paint and then

pops the cap. Tugs her mask up over her face. Lux's senses are sharp, she can smell the scent of the paint, but Lux is not alive. Lux does not respond to the paint like Amber will. Amber needs protection, because art isn't safe. She isn't safe, either, but she's about as safe as she can be.

Shaking the can, she starts, leaving behind streaks of turquoise. The sky through a door maybe, or a door made out of the sky. It'll take shape eventually.

So...

Amber keeps working. She hasn't forgotten that opener, that she saw Nathan the other day. She has been thinking about it, thinking how to expound about it, thinking about the trail of conversation she would like to follow but most importantly the destination.

"Yeah," she says, voice only a little muffled by the fall of cloth over nose and mouth. She decides that, rather than going the roundabout way, she will cut straight to where she wants to go. For god or for bad, Amber has had just about enough of playing games of misdirection and telling half-truths, for this week at least.

"How much does he know about like, you, and what you are?"

Lux

"How much do you know about me and what I am?" Lux asks in return. Because: she doesn't actually know. The question isn't shot back quick enough to cut; it isn't sharp at all. It's musing, and she would like to know.

Amber

"I know you're a," she pauses, and the hiss of her can pauses with her as she looks over at Lux. Lux who she considers a comrade in the fight against most things, a friend. If she wants to have people in her life that she can talk to about any of this, then there isn't any better place to start than here.

"Toreador. And you're mostly outside the two sides. Daniel said I should be careful around you, you might add me to your collection." Her mouth quirks in a sharp grin. Amber is a rebel. He might as well have given her a map to Lux's location and a push to get out the door.

Amber

[empathy: YOU ASKED but hey uh, should i have said that?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 7, 8, 10) ( success x 3 )

Lux

[I DON'T KNOW. Not that she's hiding anything, but COULD she if she wanted to?]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 3, 4, 9) ( success x 1 )

Lux

[Nope.]

Lux

Amber gives Lux a careful look just after she speaks; or perhaps it's just intuition suddenly sharpening up, and why not look at Lux? Lux is a compelling thing; the loveliness of her is evocative, makes people think, kindles a want, would certainly enslave. Why not look at Lux? Even if beauty's not the thing, there's that magnetism: it animates her, livens her shape and makes it - well. The point is: Lux's mouth compresses, surprisingly sharp at first, but it's a smirking sort of amusement, a distant consideration, and curiousity. Amber in her 'collection,' huh?

"My collection! I wonder what he means when he says that," Lux replies. "I suspect it isn't what I would mean were I to say the same thing!"

Lux pauses in her spray-painting; looking at the metallic poison line she made, then canting toward the wall to angle her body toward Amber. "He didn't say anything about a secret longing to shuck the bloody shackles of his current side, did he? I exist in hope."

A beat: "What did he say a Toreador was?"

Lux

ooc: Actually no, make that, "How did he describe what a Toreador is?"

Amber

Amber shrugs. "I don't know, you've never seemed like you wanted to put me in a jar." Or behind glass, or on display. So far (as she knows), no one's tried anything like that with her. She knows she's pretty, gorgeous, her beauty nearly worthy of deification. But when she thinks of collections she thinks of museums and she can't imagine being put in a museum.

Maybe one of her paintings. Maybe. She can hope. She will always hope.

And she shakes her head, she has never heard him say anything of the sort about breaking free of the Sabbat. It's something Amber ponders from time to time. When he talked about the sects before the two sides sounded so definitive. At least his side seemed a little freer than the other, but it still sounds limited. Limiting. Then he brought "Anarch" to the table. Maybe Amber can shape it into something. Maybe.

How did he describe Toreador?

Amber's eyes narrow with thought, color arching up over her head to stain the wall. "He said they're obsessed with art. And they're enchanting." Both things she thinks, judging by her association with the woman standing just a few feet away, must be true.

Lux

How still Lux can be. Lux does not often cease movement completely. Because why? That's for the daytime. That's for slumber. Lux likes being able to move. There's point to it. Amber says Lux has never seemed like she wanted to put Amber in a jar, and the creature makes a little sound. Mm. Hmm. Acceptance or acknowledgment or thoughtfulness. Lux, why, Lux doesn't want to enslave anybody, does she?

"What a boring description," Lux says, with a rill of laughter just contained. If there's a lick of darkness there, why, Lux loves her Clan, thinks it is the best (or second best), but Lux hates a lot too. Hate's always sharper than love, isn't it? "But I suppose it will do for accuracy."

Spray, spray, spray the paint...

"If a shadow hadn't fallen on you, perhaps you'd make a Toreador one night. You wear so many accomplishments they look for; but gosh, I don't think you'd like it very much."

"So he told you about the two sides, and what I am, and to be careful," here, the kissing curl of a grin: her eyes glitter; the fall of her lashes is sweet when she blinks, the touch of her chin imperious. "And I suppose he told you all about the war he plays with and - and what did he say about the kine?"

This is a slow circle back to the topic of Nathan and what he knows.

Amber

Amber frowns. Flood has told her a lot, but it's only been recently that he's started to really tell her anything at all. There is so much more out there, so much more going on. He informs her in bits and pieces as those bits and pieces come up.

Sounds like a few haven't come up yet.

"War," she mutters, thinking, but not for too long before she shakes her head. "The kine?" she asks, pausing again to give Lux her attention.

Lux

Considering; consideration. Lux studies Amber for a second. Her thumb and forefinger have been purpled; she puts that can down, picks another. Shake, shake, shake, the metallic rattling, fine spray-mist hanging in the gloomy air - "'Kine' is a word for humans."

Amber

"Ah." The sound gets tangled up, nearly becomes lost as it tries to work its way free of Amber's fabric protection. Maybe a memory has been knocked loose in her mind, a vocabulary lesson perhaps?

"He hasn't really talked about them." Them.

Lux

"Them?"

Amber

"Humans."

Lux

"Are you no longer human?"

Amber

"I don't think so." Amber is something more than human now, something better. She was always something better, though, because she was worthy of receiving Caine's blood. Which...she doesn't care about much, actually, but the name means something to Daniel, and so she is pleased.

But she looks over at Lux. It's the first time Amber's told anyone that she's not-really-human anymore. Was she not supposed to? Was this supposed to be a secret even from Lux?

[EMPATHEEEEE]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 5, 10) ( success x 1 )

Lux

[Lux doesn't hide things! Or does she?]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 3, 4, 5) ( fail )

Lux

[Still nope.]

Lux

Amber looks over at Lux; Lux is looking at the wall when Amber answers her. Amber can see, perhaps, a whisper of tension lick through Lux's shoulders, read a touch of resigned acceptance; contained, just so, and something pensive. She doesn't get a sense of dismay or anger; nor of crossing a line she shouldn't have, of secrets breached.

Lux's bare forearm is now paint-splattered, snow; the air has a promise of snow in it, doesn't it?

"Nathan is," she tells Amber. "You wanted to know how much he knew about me and what I am, yes? He knows - " she steps back from the wall, looks upward; at the sky. " - what I am. He does not know my allegiance; only what I do not ally myself to. He knows a couple clan-names; those I'd like him to do his level best avoid; he knows about the masks we wear - "

"He knows - oh. He knows more than I'd like him to know, but I could not keep him ignorant any longer. Why do you ask? Do you wonder how much it is safe to say around him? Or did he say a thing to cause you worry?"

Lux

ooc: change 'worry' to 'concern'

Amber

She wonders about that resigned acceptance, what it means, what it's for (who it's for, is it her?), but she doesn't ask. She doesn't know how. Amber, blinded by her fury and her upset at the unfairness of the world, never paid much attention to the feelings of other people. Her understanding is limited. No longer quite so blinded, she doesn't understand what she sees when she looks at other people and sees...well, whatever it is that she sees.

Nathan is still human, should that be surprising? Or should it be unsurprising? Flood changed Amber the third night he knew her, claimed her for his line and bound her with his blood. He cast his shadow immediately. Nathan is still human, though, and that just...For Amber it means...

She lowers her arm, looking at her work but not really seeing it. She already considers Nathan to be a rare thing, someone to be protected. He's a decent guy, she told Laurel. Decent guys do stupid shit like try to be the knight in armor when they can't even throw a punch.

Or in Nathan's case they go down into darkened basements where horrors await them armed with absolutely nothing whatsoever. They grab hold of unbalanced women who are likely to give him a black eye for his trouble (if he's lucky). And he's still human. Amber isn't long enough in her life as a ghoul to find that terribly endearing. It doesn't add to her desire to keep the man safe. It doesn't take away from it, either.

Drawing her attention back, she looks at Lux while she talks, listening, her mind scrabbling to hold onto those words and find meaning in them. And then there is a question.

"Both," she answers. "A friend of ou- a friend of mine, you remember Laurel?" she asks, pausing for confirmation or denial. Laurel only vaguely recalls Lux, she wouldn't be surprised if it went the other way, too. "I think she ran into another vampire. After, she ran into Nathan and his friend, and everything got really fucking tangled. When I saw him he asked me about it. I didn't know what I could tell him about what I thought so I lied to him like I lied to Laurel. Told 'em what was done to her sounded like some kind've hypnotism, and they bought it."

Lux

The creature listens, intent. The pause to seek confirmation; why, Lux seems to remember Laurel, Lux who rests her shoulder against unpainted wall now, can still held loosely in her hand. Dark still, so there's no real colour to her eyes; just the suggestion of tarnished-up green, of crystalline clarity that could be, smoke-stained - oh, so intent. Her lips are parted, slightly pursed, because words're going to come, and her head's a-slant toward the wall too. Nods, slightly, understanding when the name is dropped. A line etched between her eyebrows appears around 'fucking tangled,' because doesn't it sound fucking tangled?

A moment's silence. And then, "You needn't lie to Nathan about that kind of thing." That's what Amber wanted to know, isn't it? "Though you weren't really lying, were you?" A pause, and then such a smile, more than a suggestion. Go ahead and dream that kind've smile then write about Troy, the pride of it in flames. "It is a kind of hypnotism."

One Lux never wanted to learn before she began to interact with Nathan. [Some people Fall slowly--]

"What happened to Laurel?" Bemused, not accusatory. "How the heck did it become a clusterfuck of a thing for Nate to ask you about?"

Amber

A sigh. Not just a sigh, and exasperated sigh. "Ugh," she says, drawing out that hhh sound a bit too long. Her head dips to the side and her body swings around so that her spine strikes the wall. There will be a splotch on the back of her jacket, a swath of turquoise along the front of her hood and in a large patch between her shoulders. Amber doesn't care, ask her how many clothes she owns that are covered in paint, go on. Easier to tell you how many aren't.

Her head tips back and she crosses her arms over her chest, can of paint still held in one hand, her fingers stained with color. After a beat, Amber rolls her head to look at Lux. It was fucking tangled, she said.

"This was like high school levels of bullshit," she says, not wondering until after she's said it if Lux knows what high school levels of bullshit are like firsthand. She seems rather in-the-know about things in the present, which only strikes Amber as odd because the vampire she spends the most of her time with woke up out of history.

"I don't wanna talk about what happened to Laurel," she says. "Not 'cause I think it was bad-bad, he didn't make her hurt anyone, just socked her in the pride. But that's her business." And she's Amber's friend, and it was embarrassing for her, so Amber's not going to be the one who spreads that news all over town. "Nathan and his friend got involved because they happened to wind up in the same place as Laurel a couple days later. She said it sounded like they knew something about the guy that did it but they wouldn't tell her. I don't blame them for that, Laurel gets word on where to find this guy she's gonna hunt him down and she's going to get her ass handed to her if she's lucky." Because the difference between a vampire and a human - a kine - is vast. "Then the other chick that was involved in the incident showed up and Nathan stopped Laurel from going over to confront her."

Which was kind of insane and a clusterfuck. And then, "That's what Laurel told me after. I found out about it because she texted me to tell Nathan she was sorry, which I did. And when he told me to message her back I told him to do it himself and gave him her number." So at least they're all connected now, maybe.

She sighs again and this is less annoyed, less aggravated. "After I talked to her about it, I did thank Nathan for trying to help. That other girl," Amber doesn't know if the woman was a girl, doesn't even realize that she's seen the woman often, what a small place Denver is, "was probably just another victim, and she'd've been a victim twice-over if Laurel got her hands on her. I met Nathan after, which is when he tried to talk to me about it. There's no secret handshake, is there?" she asks, mostly joking but partly serious. "So people who know about this stuff know they can talk about it? Because jesus fucking christ."

Lux

Lux is either accepting of Laurel's business being Laurel's business even if it involves another vampire or she isn't invested enough in the blonde woman's fate to push that line of inquiry. Is that so different from acceptance? There's a suggestion of a smirk when Amber mentions high school levels of bullshit, so she does seem to understand. A stillness to her gaze on Amber as the clay-shaped thing, Virago-thing, spins out the still utterly confounding to Lux series of events. There's a soft: Heh. 'Round about when Amber says the girl would've been a victim twice-over if Laurel got her hands on her.

And then she is silent, considering Amber's last mostly joking but partly serious remark. She rests her temple against the wall; closes her eyes, briefly. She can hear so much; it still bothers her, occasionally - it is still so new, too new.

There are secret handshakes after all. The Sabbat use them, don't they. To see whether or not they're among fellows, or vampires they look upon as less than vampires; as prey and traitors. The Sabbat, a machine Amber is part of now.

"Mm. Really, you just tend to pick it up. Remember faces you saw at this watering hole or that, learn who's all right by whatever your patron tells you." Patron; it's a deliberate word, though she doesn't say it deliberately. "Truly, Amber, for the most part, we -- oh, it's just stupid and difficult, a snarl. We're suspicious, you know? We don't want our friends who breathe to be fingered by the other party; not unless they're our friends, and even then it's not always nice. And if you're hanging out at one watering hole, there's a lot of fucking bullshit watering hole pride that goes on. Leads to rumbles, you know?"

Amber

Patron. It's not a word that Amber would use, though it is fairly accurate. When Flood scooped her out of the gutter he set her down in a place with easy money and a comfortable home so that all she need do with her time is create. Paint. Color the world, color the house, make it feel like a home and do whatever she wanted. Her feelings for him aren't for him a patron, though, but that's not really her fault, is it? His blood is in her veins, twisting her heart and pointing it in his direction. How would she feel about him if that blood were allowed to run out of her system? Completely, though, not the couple months dry she managed when she ran away.

They're not dwelling on patrons, though, they're talking about secret handshakes. How to know who knows what you know about what the rest of the world isn't supposed to know. Truthfully, Amber doesn't want a whole sprawling support network. She's not going to tell Laurel anything because Laurel will think she's crazy and she wouldn't want Laurel to think she's crazy. Even knowing Nathan knows isn't terribly helpful to her, she will still need to be careful. At least she thinks she'll need to keep being careful. She vowed that if anyone found out Flood's secrets it wouldn't be because of her, and she intends to keep that vow even though she only ever made it to herself. And Nathan used to be (is, is right this very moment, is still) looking into her Lasombra, which means Amber needs to be doubly careful.

But maybe Nathan won't ask her how she knows about vampires. Maybe they can talk about this strange attack on Laurel and she can tell him that she's more or less (hoping to) have it covered.

She nods, though, listening, because she knows that they're suspicious. She lives with Flood and she keeps his secrets and she's learning to be suspicious, because of him and for him.

"That makes sense," she says, pushing herself off the wall. Flood was the one who told her about Lux, after all. And Jack.

"It seems kinda nice between you and Daniel," she comments. "The other night was more fun than I thought it'd be."

Lux

There are theories about alternate universes. Different timestreams. Possibilities that never happened so became impossible becoming elsewhere possible. Humanity doesn't like to let go of What Ifs and What Might've Beens. What if Lux and Flood had run directly across one another at the August Siege of Richthofen? Would it have been so nice? What's going to happen the day Lux and Flood run into one another and Flood's with his pack or his sister-by-blood or - ?

Lux yet stays slung against the wall, head canted, a curl of hair licking against the façade light as a kiss. But her mouth curves, one corner carving up; needle-sharp, compass-quick, and it is all impulse - impulse that makes her, poised, precise, straighten, lean on her other foot, drag her fingers through her hair because it began to fall into her face. The movement necessitated a look down; it was that kind've swing-of-a-straightening, gravity-dance.

"Yes, well... I like to have fun and know everybody and Daniel's a doll when he wants to be; a doll when he doesn't, too, the rake-hell whole of him. But doesn't that always depend on the company?" Lux: she laughs. "'The karaoke show.' Dance, Dance Revolution next, I do hope."

Lux shakes her spray can again, and sprays the wall. Kshh, kshhhh.

Amber

Someday maybe Amber will ask if she can paint Lux. Someday, but not a soon day. She thinks it's nice hanging out with Lux and Flood at the same time, the three of them a trio of not-exactly-friends, but she also knows that Lux can't come to the house unless Flood invites her. And if he hasn't invited her yet - or she's declined an invitation - she's smart enough to know there must be a reason.

She has an idea niggling in her mind. Maybe based off of something Flood told her or maybe something she came up with for herself, sparked by his shared caution. So maybe sometime soon she'll be able to ask for that honor and that pleasure. Because look at her, shouldn't she be put on a canvas? Was painting not begun on cave walls in the earliest days of man but to capture such beauty in still-life forever?

Amber is bent to find a new can, to change the hue of that turquoise and make it dark and darker when Lux suggests their next outing. The ghoul can't help it, she laughs, and what a laugh. Has Lux ever heard Amber try to laugh before? It is not a pleasant sound, but a grating, scraping sound. Smoker's lungs, perhaps, but to a romantic maybe something more. It sounds like Amber's laughter has been kept locked up in her chest so long the bars have rusted shut. And that bark, that fresh release, it is the sound of rust scraping and grinding off as the humor is set free.

Whatever a listener thinks, it leads into a cough that nearly disguises the chime or buzzing of an electronic device. Lux gets hers first, but not much long after, Amber's phone goes off. Shifting her weight she pulls her phone from a pocket of her sweatshirt, sees she's got a message, sees who it's from, starts to smile.

The smile dies on her lips when she sees Nathan's face, pale and tired and scared looking, staring up at her from her phone's screen. Amber's blood turns to ice in her veins and she shoots up, stands up so fast she might faint, but one hand slams against the wall's surface, saving her from a fall. A second later and her other hand joins it, quick and hard and with the crunch. "Fucking Nathan!" Anger, yes. Fury, yes. Betrayal, too, and hurt. Her mangled phone drops to the ground to shatter a little more and Amber punches the wall again, this time with a very different crack and she cries out sharply. Pain. Pain spreads up from her knuckles and into the back of her hand and her fingers go numb. Grimacing, she finds she can't bend her fingers without white-hot pain lancing through her hand with each twitch of her muscles. The skin of her knuckles has split. Turning away from Lux, she uses her other hand to tug her bandanna free to wrap around her injured hand.

Lux gets a message from Daniel Flood. Amber is laughing, and that distracts Lux from looking at the message. Lux is a suggestion [a compelling, an I-am-compelled, a what wouldn't I do for - ] of a half-smile, the expression a knife's point gleam in her eyes.

Then Amber stands so swift. Lux narrows her eyes at her. Lux's phone is unlocked now, but still she has yet to look at it. Amber shouts. The shout's loud loud loud and a shrill of pain (a stab) for the Toreador. The Toreador whose eyes go black and dark and wide and whose expression goes still and sharp and pained. That sharp line. That troubled curve to her mouth. Lux stares at Amber.

Doesn't connect 'Fucking Nathan' (if it wasn't so loud she didn't quite absorb what the sound meant [it's only because Amber is so close; because she was so unprepared]), but does drop her gaze to her own phone while Amber beats her fist against the wall. Smell of blood. Lux is a social shark, but isn't she also a shark and a monster? Suggestion of blood, left behind on the wall, and

oh, it doesn't matter. Lux has checked her messages, and do you know what happens then? The beast surges up against her breast-bone: it wakes, and wants to run - wakes, wants to seize her bones, and muscles, lick away her mind and - it surges up, the Beast, and Lux wills it calm. Barely so, hang nail of control. Her voice therefore is taut when she says:

"Amber."

Amber

It happens so fast. She doesn't know that her shout, loud with lancing pain, hurts the woman she considers a friend. If she did maybe she'd try to muffle it. If she finds out later she'll feel terrible, a sick feeling in her gut that she won't fully grasp. Because Amber may not be full of tender, delicate feelings or an understanding of them, but she has a conscience. She has regret.

And she will regret later. She regrets now. It's awkward, trying to tie off her hand, trying to close off that scent. Blood. Lux is a creature not like Flood but so like Flood. Lux is poised and collected and cool but Amber knows, because Flood can be those things too and sometimes Flood verges on a loss of control. Amber needs to clean that blood up or at least keep the smell of it from seeping out so strongly.

Little does she know it does no good. Lux would smell a droplet of her blood from a ways away and they are so close. Too close.

Amber turns her head, looks back over her shoulder at Lux when she hears her name spoken in a voice that is tight. So unlike Lux but then, maybe she got the same message. Flood knows Nathan's connection to the Toreador, of course he would have told her. Right?

She has no words, only question in her eyes, dark and colorless in the dark and colorless night.

Lux

The phone is in Lux's hand. Does Amber try to look at whatever is on the screen? If Amber does, perhaps she'd see (if the angle was just right [smart phones, privacy]) a familiar picture. Then again, Lux's grip on the phone is tight. Her knuckles are sharp. It's not blood that's inducing the pale-skinned cold-hearted (no, never [but]) creature toward Fury, toward being the monster instead of the woman but the scent of blood doesn't help. It's like a clarion call. Lux is staring at Amber without blinking, and it is still Lux staring at Amber. Still Lux's will in her eyes.

Still poised, too. But oh, oh just. Less so this time. Lux does not jerk or gasp. Lux just stays very very still.

Because Lux is looking at Amber and she is thinking, oh, darling Daniel, you put terror into my mortal's eyes? Should I not do the same to yours? Because Lux is looking at Amber and she is thinking, oh, but I don't wish to do such things. Because Lux is looking at Amber and she is not really thinking in words: so neat, like that. All she's thinking is: do not. No matter how satisfying, that impulse to devastate. Not Amber, specifically: but it's the natural response to fear-so-strong.

Lux. She tries to be will.

Her tone is conversational but there is no humour in it: "I need you to get on the other side of the wall so I do not see you. Slowly, please."

Does that answer Amber's wordless question? Lux cannot see the question; she is too concerned with self-mastery.

Amber

The possibility of Lux is so far from Amber's pain-wracked mind. Hadn't they just mentioned how nice it was, the three of them together? Going out to karaoke, getting Flood out to some other modern past-time?

She sees the look on Lux's face and she is uncomprehending of it. Is everything different now? Is everything ruined? Because Flood and because Nathan? Because boys? And here is Amber, who has already spent her anger only to bring harm to herself. She struck without thinking, destroyed her phone (help, call for help), destroyed her hand (hurts, hurts so much), and now she's stuck here in this moment with Lux.

Who is speaking. Who is holding perfectly still and looking at Amber in a way that she cannot possibly understand as tears of pain spring into her storm green eyes, adding a little salt water to the illusion of a stormy sea.

Some words make sense. do not see are some. Slowly another. For Amber there is no speed, there is no quickness. The pain in her hand is destroying her senses, distorting her perceptions. There is a part of her that still wants to sit down at someone's feet and cry, but she won't. Not Amber. She will move, she wills herself to move, and so. Slowly. She does. Her bandanna-d hand cradled close to her body, her spine curled to protect it. Her head remains turned. She does not want to let Lux out of her sight. She does not actually wish to show her back to her.

And then there is the wall's edge, away from the faint light of their little painting spot. It's darker there but not unbearable. Amber slips around the side finally, stumble stumble stumbles her way down the wall. Maybe she should go? Can she drive herself to the hospital? Can she find someone to help her? Maybe. Her car is that way, she remembers. Lux said only that she needed her out of her sight and Amber, she wants to keep going. She wants to get to him, to them.

She wants to know why. Why? WHY? Why the fuck was nate "following" Flood "home?" At least he didn't seem to make it. That wasn't any living room that Amber's seen before. At least that secret is still safe.

Lux

Lux continues to be a poised (on the verge of [before you snap]). Unmoving, a statue. Poor Amber. Phoneless. They'd been laughing, they'd been amused. Poor Amber of the blood-beaded, mangled hand. Not the hands, anything but. Had Lux been paying closer attention, she might've quicksilvered her way between the wall and Amber's fist. After all: what's a flesh and blood blow to such as Lux? Amber's got potent blood wicking through her too, but not so much. A ghoul. They're hardy, yet still. Lux can be impulsive.

This is not an impulsive moment. This moment when Amber, eyes tearful, looks at the creature who is watching her without moving, and then slowly backs away to the wall's edge. Darker there, but not unbearable. The creature standing by all those paint cans and stencil-making stuffs is still not moving. Her eyes are wide; how lovely she looks even now. La belle dame sans merci. Vampire. There is still mistaking her: she looks like a young woman, all moonlight and gloom. But for how fucking still she is.

Amber at the edge of the wall. Lux looks down; her eyelashes drop like a curtain fall. Down at her phone. She can hear Amber stumbling on the other side of that wall. Her hearing's settling, though it still hurts. Can hear Amber coming nearer or going further. Can hear her and part of her knows, instinctually, just where she'd leap up, where she'd try to pounce from, where -

But it isn't the hunt that's trying to unlock that Other Thing inside her. It's fear. It's worry. Eyes closed now, she waits. She does not take steadying breaths and she does not count her heartbeats. Who knows what Lux considers, when she is trying to control herself? Who knows what mental rosary she counts?

Not long after, she is freed from the would-be compulsion to ravage and she opens her eyes.

She looks at the phone again; then at the spraypaint cans; then at the place where Amber punched the wall, because she can still smell it.

" - Amber?"

If there is no answer, Lux circles the wall, looking for her.

Amber

There is no answer. Amber is gone, but she's not gone-gone. She can't be gone. The pain is terrible and every movement she makes seems like it jars her. How is it her tibialis anterior is connected to her lumbrical muscles? Why does a step shake her hand? Why does the body work?

Why why why? Amber's head is full of whys, most of them she can't think clearly enough to dismiss.

She goes, but in the time it takes for Lux to hold tight the reigns of her Beast she doesn't make it very far. Around the corner of the building is emptiness, but with her acute hearing Lux can hear each grunt of pain that escapes her lips, every groan, every raking, rasping breath.

And Amber thinks, Where is this? Where am I? I've been walking for years I should see the ocean by now. Want. Want to see an ocean. Want to- want- where?

It takes a long time for her to make it a few feet, and it takes even longer as she weaves her way around patches and pools of darkness, places where who-knows-what lies in wait. Is this even the way to her car? Is this even the way home?

Her eyes hurt like she wants to cry but it's nothing compared to the pain in her hand. Every muscle in her body is tight with effort. The effort to keep her eyes from watering any further, to keep her feet moving one before the other, to keep going, keep pushing on to wherever.

Lux

[Conscience.]

Dice: 2 d10 TN6 (5, 7) ( success x 1 )

Lux

Flood's message and replying to it is very important to Lux. There is no answer from Amber; but Lux follows her anyway. The sounds she's making: groan, grunt, effort. The human body makes an effort in the way that the vampire's body does not. The vampire's body is an eternal thing, depending on one thing or another. The vampire's body still reacts to pain and effort and pleasure: but there's always an undercurrent of hunger, then - and it has nothing to do with physical systems - so there's no real effort. Pain-noises, certainly, pleasure-noises, surely, but not that scraped out've wounded that Lux is hearing from Amber.

Flood's message and replying to it -

Lux considers. Then she quickens her pace to overtake Amber. Not to grab her arm or to throw her down or beat her up, and Lux is very quick, isn't she?

"Amber," she says, once she's near. "Fucking Nathan indeed. How hurt is your hand; you need the ER?"

Her tone of voice is not a casual oh whatever happened there that just happened; her voice is still a lick of tension, darkness under smoke. Restraint. But Amber's in pain; she might be a ghoul, but how quickly do ghouls heal? Like Lux pays attention to that. Doesn't it change from ghoul to ghoul? Eh.

Amber

If Amber hears Lux's quick steps coming closer she makes no sign of it. Doesn't stop or slow, doesn't try to speed up. She doesn't waste any extra energy than she needs to in order to move, move, move. It's not hard to catch her up, anyway.

Then Lux is with her, not grabbing her or shoving her, but speaking her, voice still tense. Can she see? Is it light enough here in this patch of semi-dark that she can see how pale Amber is? The ashen pallor of her desert-dusk skin? She doesn't want to answer because answering means talking and talking means redirecting her breaths, and right now she needs every breath to fuel her lungs and power her forward.

"I'm," she starts, because really, she has to say something. It's Lux, and she's never found it easy to deny Lux a word, a sentence, a painting. She starts and she stops because she considers lying, but Amber is a terrible liar in the best of circumstances and these? These are not the best of circumstances.

She pauses finally, looks down at the colorful cloth wrapped around her hand. She wills her fingers to move but they ignore her, because Amber is a rebel to her core, even her body refuses to obey her. The breath she takes would be a sob if she'd let it, but she doesn't let it. She keeps that shit under control. And she looks at Lux and her face is tight. There are lines that mar that earthen, fired-clay beauty. She swallows hard.

"I think so," she says, lie, she knows she does. Amber looks at Lux, and it is the look of a stone wall breaking, trying to keep all its rocks from falling down and not doing the best job of it. "I want to see him. I want to see Danny, I want to know what happened, but my phone." She broke it, stupid thing. Stupid girl. Thought she had that temper under control but then one thing happens and that control unravels.

Lux

"Where's your car?" if Amber brought one here. Lux doesn't know. The question's automatic. Lux did not come by car. Lux came by rooftop.

Hard on the heels of that question: "If it's too far, I'll have my," your what, Lux, "friend come get us."

The Toreador holds up her hand; she still has her phone. Did not destroy it. "And I'm going to make a call."

Amber

Yes, Amber, where is your car? Does she remember? "Couple blocks..." think of the freeway, away from the freeway is, "east?"

Too far, probably, unless Lux wants to carry Amber, or go with her and take forever to go a couple blocks east.

Lux

Lux seems to assume she and Amber are going to be sticking together.

"Do you want your car or to sit tight while Gary gets here? He can help with the cans."

Lux

ooc: er, make that "Do you want your own car" or etc etc

Amber

Amber's car. Amber's car is a sweet sweet ride, a lovely red muscle car for a lovely, muscle-y woman. There is a part of her that doesn't really want to let it go again, she just got back to it. But the rest of her, the parts of her that are nerve-endings on fire with pain, those parts of her couldn't give less of a fuck.

She shakes her head, but even she couldn't say if she means No or Not Right Now or No You Deal With It Look At Me. She grits her teeth, though, and she forces out an answer. "I don't think. I can get that. Far." But she doesn't want to 'sit' tight, if she sits she won't be able to get up again under her own power.

Lux

"Then he will come." Lux taps out a quick text for Gareth Miller. "And we will wait. He'll come quickly; taught a bat how to get out've Hell once." Lux doesn't have ice handily in her pocket or anything, so that's really all she can offer. And even did she, her main concern lies elsewhere. Her voice is intent. Less insouciant than usual. No insouciance at all. Nothing casual. Then she scrolls through her contacts and puts the phone to her ear. Her gaze is on Amber this whole time. Amber who is in pain. Lux's gaze is still on Amber when her attention goes elsewhere.

The person she is calling on the phone. Ten minutes have passed since that photograph was sent. Ten minutes and here they are, Amber and Lux.

Amber is in no state to notice another person's emotions - is she?

Even Lux's, who is so possessed by them (becomes a possession [compelling]), who becomes the center (gravity [magnetic]). Even Lux's, right? When they're not sheathed, knife in silk. Lux's eyes are not bright. They're dark, but limned in a dark radiance that has all to do with force of concern. Her jaw tightens.

Glass-creature, darling-thing.

The person on the other line picked up, right? And said a thing. A pause. A measure.

"Why, if you want to know I'll tell you; but why the Hell start that conversation over the phone? So easy to listen in. Why don't we meet up? I'm at your complete disposal."

[Lux would like to not sound furious & stressed & at totally at Flood's mercy in this. Does she manage? Find out! Manipulation + Subterfuge.]Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (3, 3, 5, 7, 9) ( success x 2 )

Lux

ooc: Hmm, I should be clear. I think she walked a little ways away to make the call, but not out of Amber's line of sight or so she can't hear.

Amber

The only things Amber is aware of for the time being are pain, the cold, pain, pain, a breeze, and pain. Her mind wants to get used to it, wants to tune it out but it can't. It's too much. If she weren't what she is would she even be able to tolerate it? She's never hurt her hand like this before, usually the walls she punches are the flesh of someone's body or drywall that crumbles at a tap. She needs her hands.

Lux says that they will wait and then she steps away to make a phone call. Amber, cradling her hand miserably, holds herself still. Does she hear the conversation? Can she tell who's on the other end? She is trying not to listen but what else does she have to keep her mind off her pain?

Lux

Lux isn't saying anything now so the person on the other line must be speaking instead. Must be saying something, something that makes the creature look how it is she's looking right now.

And then Lux pivots: it's a sluice of a movement - fluid and unnatural. Lux isn't human. Lux's grace is more-than-human. She'd cut water from the air like those swords in old legends, wouldn't she? Movement that sharp, that fucking poised. Lifts her chin at Amber once, absent-minded but indicative of a return.

Lux. Doesn't want Amber to see her right now.

Back around the wall, underneath a portion that hangs and keeps noise out. A protected little ledge full of darkness, out of sight and out of mind, where she can be whatever it is Lux is in dark places like that. Amber can perhaps still hear the sound of Lux's voice - but it's pitched low, intimate.

And a conversation is had; doesn't take very long. Three minutes. Five, maybe, with the weight of the occasional silence.

And then the Toreador's coming back, and Amber can definitely hear

"...with a face I still long to see, some soon time, huh? Good night, Daniel."

Is Amber where Lux left her? Has she taken a seat? Leaned against the other side of the wall? Lux goes over to her right away, and she looks - what does she look? Leashed. Intent.

"Apparently," she says, "there is no underestimating the foolish fucking stupidity of a no account young reporter. They used to call them ticks."

Amber

Has it really only been ten minutes since she got that message? It feels like an eternity, like she left that spot a year ago and everything should be different but it's not. It's only been ten minutes. And even earth crumbling, ground shattering ten minutes is still just ten minutes.

Lux on her call. It's quiet and then Lux gives her that look, turns, leaves. Mostly Amber is relieved. This place isn't dark enough for that darkness to seep into her core, coil around the bit of her stomach, lay her low. She will be alright. Amber is an adult, she can be alone for a little while.

Except alone means no distractions from the pain, which is burning now. Her hand throbs with every beat of her heart and it aches. With nothing to take her mind off it the tears return. This is not the sad, woe-is-me crying of the desolate. This is a human girl's reaction to intense, crippling pain. The tears do not fall, they leak in a thin little trickle over her cheeks and down her throat while her body remains tense, taut, tight.

Another eternity passes - five minutes is a long time when one is left without the ability to think straight - and then Lux is returning. Amber swipes at her cheeks with the palm of her free hand. Did Lux say Daniel? Too late, the phone is gone, conversation over.

Amber is where she was left, standing still and yet somehow diminished. With her body curling in on itself she resembles a wounded animal protected her injured paw. Maybe that description isn't so far off the mark.

She frowns, trying to make sense of Lux's words. She nods. Does she understand? Maybe. "Is he here?" she asks, and she must mean Lux's friend who can help with the paints. Hopefully he can help with Amber, too, guide her to a car and into the back seat, tuck her in, keep her safe. When he gets there. They still have some time yet, a few more minutes before someone comes to take Amber to the hospital for her hand. If Lux talks, Amber is quiet and tries to focus, to listen, but really, later all she'll remember is the pain.

Take A Picture, It'll Last Longer

Nate

Sometime over the weekend came a text:

Dad gave me a camera yesterday. No idea what to do with it. You artist types know where to buy film, right?

Maybe it's just an excuse to hang out. They haven't seen each other since the beginning of February. Since he had just gotten out of the hospital and his eye was still blood-angry and healing from his adventure in the basement of a used bookstore that has since closed.

Not a lot of places in Denver are open late enough that a vampire and an insomniac can find a place to hang out that isn't potentially haunted or illegal. Hanging around one's apartment gets old awful fast. He suggests they meet at the main library at Denver University. It's where they met.

This oughtn't have any special significance but Lux doesn't know what the hell all Nathan has been up to lately. If and when Lux shows up the reporter is in the film and media section of the stacks but he's not studying. He had to drop his critical analysis course because he'd missed the first four weeks of lecture and could not possibly catch up while working more than forty hours a week.

He's looking at a photography book. He has his cheekbone propped on the heel of his hand and looks puzzled. This is why he always hired someone, man. Still photography is way different than videography.

Lux

Lux hasn't been out of touch although her contact is erratic. A text one night. A picture another night. Perhaps a whole text conversation another, and so on. Spaces between. Nathan does not know what Lux does with her time, does he? He hasn't a clue. She mailed him a valentine that showed up on February 17th. A little watercolor painting, in a frame of industrial tape, mailed through the US Postal System like trust.

As far as Nate knows, what the Hell is Lux? Lux is just a beautiful creature, gloom-haired, compelling, smile like a premonition of heart-break, smile like the drag of gravity, impulsive and who the Hell knows? A beautiful creature who has decided to shape itself out've the city to be his friend. Watch out for him, or try. Make him play games. Trust in me. [I (want to) love you.] A vampire, but one who's chosen to make him safe. Maybe she's just lonely. They've gotta get lonely; don't they in all the stories?

"'Sup!" Lux says, as she pulls a chair beside Nathan out of the table. Spins it neatly, with precision if you please. Straddles it, folds her arms across its top, rests her sharp little chin on her forearms, hides her mouth too.

She'd texted back the night after he sent that message. Oh sure we artist types stick together. Maybe I've got a line on a man who knows a man who knows a man who'll know where to find the goods if his gullet is properly greased. Capiche?

And now here they are.

Nate

Keeping him company at the table are a few professional journals he nabbed from the periodical room and a cup of coffee from a place on campus. Maybe he met up with his father before he came here. If they're both going to commit to this trying thing he might as well return the favor occasionally. It's not like you can see the old man's office window from the roof of the library or anything.

One of the journals is the Colorado Law Review. Tit for tat, right?

When Lux spins the chair and parks herself in it Nate's posture doesn't do a thing to change. He is still hunch-shouldered over the table to prop up his head but his dark eyes leave the book's pages to find her face.

Interesting fact: only two percent of the world's population has green eyes. This makes it the rarest eye color in the world. Both Lux and Theodore have green-ish eyes.

Another interesting fact: Nathan who is a crime reporter and budding investigative journalist doesn't notice shit like this. Amber on the other hand thought that Nate and Lux were siblings or cousins the first time she met them.

And now here they are.

He lifts his eyebrows at her greeting and then huffs out a laugh. It's the most energetic noise he's made in months. His eye is healed but the scar tissue now shadowing it hasn't settled into a lighter color yet. It's still pink.

"You're in a good mood," he says. Sounds confused.

Lux

He can tell that her smile just deepened even if her mouth is still hidden. The face isn't made of many parts; it is a whole thing. Animated, spirit. Movement of her cheeks, of her hair-line, even her eyebrows; it's all subtle, even the change in the shape of her eyes. After a second, Lux unfolds her forearms, laces her fingers together instead and keeps her elbows on the chair's back rests her chin on the cradle of her fingers, and the smile that animated her so is just a suggestion (bright), "You don't have to sound so surprised about it. You'll make me feel like a cloud of gloom and darkness and wouldn't that just be too fucking mean of you?"

Lux is in a good mood; she plants her soles into the ground. Scoots the chair forward and, straightening, reaches out with both hands, like: c'mere, give me a hug.

Nate

Oh her teasing and her suggestion of a smile. They strike him as being as funny as anything else usually does only this time he laughs that library-laugh again. It gets him to stop propping his head up on his hand like he's running on fumes and sit back in his chair.

He doesn't go for the coffee in the span between Lux planting her feet and coming forward like to collect him in her arms. And though the amusement lingers on his face which is so young despite his careening into his late twenties with all the abandon of a drunken bull in a haunted china cabinet he now appears suspicious.

Do they hug when they greet each other? He can't remember. They're friends but he isn't a physical person. Is one supposed to hug one's friends? What about one's immediate family? He and Hannah went through a period after he got back from Afghanistan where they didn't hug but that's because they were also thousands of miles apart.

Hannah ran away from home once. Told Nebraska to go fuck itself and got on a bus to come out to California but the cops found her at her first layover. Having a judge for a mother is the worst goddamn thing in the world.

It's awkward leaning across chairs to hug but Nate scoots his chair forward a bit and then wraps his arms around her.

"I know I'm fucking mean," he says. "But you're in a more-good mood than usual, so my meanness is irrelevant."

Lux

His suspicion doesn't make her laugh. But it could. Lux enjoys laughing, doesn't she? Does. The laughter's contained: everything's contained behind a certain insouciant poise - but he can certainly see the polished-up edge of amusement at his reaction. Lux's hair smells of cigarette smoke. Beneath that, bulgarian rose, ambrette seed absolute, saffron, white pear, a touch of oudh, clean skin. He wraps his arms around and she wraps her arms around and squeezes with her shoulders going up! And it is quite awkward; the chairs are quite woodenly against it. They say: nope, we're not moving or giving, we are shares, made of wood. We're also here. Lux doesn't care if the chair's top is digging into her ribs, though, the slats pressing hard against her stomach. Her grip loosens after only a couple of seconds; and then she's resting an elbow against the chair's top again, resting her chin in the palm of her hand, fingers curled so they could hide her mouth or they could not depending on the whim of the moment.

"Mayybe," says she, with a sluice-of-a-look; an almost dimple. "Mayybe I just think you're looking pretty good, so my mood's more than good. Mayybe I'm all twitterpated because you're going to do art."

Nate

Nathan carries a messenger bag with him because it's easier to fit his laptop into than a briefcase and because he can fit other things into it that he needs to lug around without sacrificing one of his free hands. Books or flashlights or whatever the hell else he might need during the day.

No comment as to whether he's looking good or not. He looked like hell last time she saw him. Was groggy still and barely beginning to heal. Nothing flirtatious in the comment even if Lux herself is a flirtation. She steered him away from that the first night they spent in each other's company and Nathan has never made a move anyway.

Sure as hell isn't going to make a move now that he knows what she is. He doesn't know if vampires have sexual appetites but he doesn't want to know either.

"If by 'do art' you mean 'go on a scavenger hunt for film for a camera that was produced when Truman was president,' then yeah. That's..." He coughs into the back of his wrist. "That's definitely something worth getting your twitters pated about."

Lux

Truth: Lux is a flirtation but doesn't mean to flirt with Nathan Marszalek. Put distance between them (a warning, rake-of-a-gaze) the few times she saw that interest in her rearing its head. Maybe if he ever wonders now he thinks it's just because that's what vampires do. If they don't intend to bite you. Lux doesn't intend to bite Nathan: Does she? Hasn't yet. Approaching a year of them knowing one another. They've both lost friends and been comforted (more or less) by the other. They've dealt together with strangeness. Been a rough year. Lux knows just how rough for Nathan even if he doesn't know hr whole story, but why the hell does he need to?

So: Lux is a flirtation but she doesn't mean to be. Her gaze sharpens with interest when he mentions the film and the camera here in flesh and blood. Same interest it had sharpened when he prepared her with that text.

"What," she says. "He gave you an antique? Well vintage never does go out of style, and isn't there something about fixing the present into the past using a relic out've that past? My twitters stay pated, Nathan baby. If it's that old might have to get the film online or from a specialty shop though. Why'd your dad decide to give you a camera of all things?"

Nate

"Why does my dad do anything?"

It's a rhetorical question. A thoughtless parry. Lux doesn't know his father and they've never met and it's entirely possible she doesn't remember her own father. He has never asked how old she is though he's asked where she's from and all other manner of feeling-you-out questions more related to plotting a course of friendship than hoping to get in her pants.

What has he even told her about his parents? Little. Only that on the scale of bad hospital visitors she doesn't rank up there with his editor or his father. Might have obliquely mentioned their divorce when he mentioned his sister staying with him over winter break.

He picks up his coffee cup and squints at the lid before taking a sip to lubricate his throat. It's not an evasion. He just wants to think before his foot jumps into his mouth.

"He was cleaning out a warehouse that's full of - okay. None of my grandparents are alive, they all died either before I was born or when I was little, so I don't know much about any of them. But after Dad's father died all his stuff went into a warehouse out in... I actually don't know which state it's in." This is a terrible story. "We didn't talk between middle school and me moving out here." Not 'much.' Just flat out didn't talk. "But he was at the warehouse recently and found this camera and was like 'Hey Nate needs a hobby, he hasn't been writing on his blog because his fucking photographer friend's dead, this old-ass camera will be good for him.'"

Lux

The rhetorical question is treated like a rhetorical question that needn't be parried by another rhetorical question or even worse an answer. Lux can spin a whole godamned conversation out've questions most people wouldn't bother answering, just because it's fun to try, just because why the Hell not? The nights are long. Nathan's father.

Lux wants to know about him. Wants to know he's happy. Wants to know -

Lux doesn't really want to know the things she wants to know. But she still seems amused (in a good mood) by his story, although her expression becomes a touch more inscrutable. No, inscrutable isn't the word. Lux is hiding nothing, but there are shadows in her eyes; there're always shadows in her eyes; they're always looking at something, and that something isn't always easy to explicate.

"Mayybe it will be, Nathan. Do you think so? What are you going to do with it once you've got film?"

Lux reaches out to pull the photography book he was looking at toward her, peering at it with the same intent interest a cat might give a goldfish swimming around in a bowl.

Nate

"He said he wants to, um..."

There is a lot that Nathan isn't saying about either his father or his relationship with his father or whether or not he thinks his father is happy. He doesn't know his father. When he was a child he loved his father very much and when he was a preteen he enjoyed spending time with him but didn't necessarily want to be seen in public with him too-too much because his father was one of those young-ish fathers who everyone else thought was so cool and no 12-year-old boy thinks his father is cool. Even when his father is a prosecutor for the district attorney's office and has gotten to hang out with cops and FBI agents and all these other cool people you only hear about on TV.

Lux doesn't want to know details and Nathan doesn't want to talk about them. They were both in a good mood before.

"You know. See whatever I end up taking pictures of." He hears himself sounding dour and distracted. So he changes his tone: "It's cool, you know, I just..." He flinch-frowns and rubs at his brow. "It was his father's, and his father I guess was really good at taking pictures. It seems like a waste of film since I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I'm a writer, not a photographer. Ask my editor, anytime I have to take a picture of a house or something for the paper it looks like a 97-year-old with DTs took it."

Lux

Lux does not believe that photography is easy. Lux does not believe that digital cameras have made photography easy. Not photography as an art form. Not photography as a way to make an image last forever. To elevate a second. Lux has all kinds of thoughts on photography and the art there-of. There was a time when she had a whole secret -- well. Perhaps Lux will tell Nathan that story.

Until then, she listens to what he says. That veering toward the dour, distracted. Has begun to thumb through that book she swiped, the one he was looking at, chin in palms, when she arrived. Oh, was he looking at a certain page? Ah well. Lost now. Does the shape her mouth makes appear wistful, or shadowed by something musing? Lux doesn't bite her lip or scrape her teeth across her lower lip or anything like that while she's listening, looking at that page, so who knows.

To look at the book she'd had to cant her body to the side since the chair is facing Nathan (well, backwards to Nathan, facing her) and not the desk. Had to lean across the chair's arms, elbow just touching the desk, see? And her hair's a mess tonight. Looks good on her, though. Doesn't look planned, but it looks good. Without coming out've that poise, her eyes flick up.

"As it happens, I am a dab hand with the photography, you know. When I was very young I had my own secret dark room where my mother would never find it. I may or may not have used Truman-era equipment, as well." Pause; suggestive lift of her eyebrows.

And then, so fucking pleased. "I did once use one of those really old cameras, you know, the what's it called, gosh, well you don't know either, those cameras that look like a birdhouse had a romantic tryst with an accordion and the plates are silver and you've gotta just be hunched over for an age."

Nate

Nothing in life is easy if one does not exert a bit of effort. Writing for example. Nathan is a writer. He was attached to a reconnaissance unit in Iraq and his job was to take video of what happened there but when he wasn't deployed Private First Class Marszalek's job was to write articles. Problem was he was deployed three times in six years. He was a Corporal when he was discharged. He could write but his writing was very dry and sometimes a typo slipped through.

His editor doesn't have the patience to mold him but he can see that the dysthymic quietly foul-mouthed kid has a passion. He genuinely gives a shit about his subjects. He believes in the justice system and in right and wrong and when he writes his news dispatches and follows up on crimes he humanizes everyone.

When Lux looks up from the book Nate looks back at her. Snorts at her supposition that he wouldn't know what the fucking accordion-looking camera is called either.

"What," he asks, "a daguerrotype camera? You used one of those? How old are you?"

It's a joke. He does not want to know how old she is.

Lux

"A thousand and one, just like Arabian Nights," Lux breathes, eyes closing to better hold the answer in her mind, before they open again. Is she fucking with him? Probably.

Nate

Nate huff-laughs again and then reaches out to grab another photography book. This one is not a tutorial. It's a collection of photographs other people have taken. It scatters the professional journals. The state Law Review and something called Journalism and Mass Communication Educator. Shit that nobody wants to read for fun.

As he flips to the first page he says, "Shut up." A few seconds to flip through the pages and recenter his thoughts. Without looking at her: "Are you offering to teach me how to do art?"

Lux

"If I say yes, do you feel that distinct twittery flutter in your pate that can only mean you're abso-fucking-lutely twitterpated about the idea?"

Nate

Nate blinks. Nate considers the question. Nate sits back in his chair again and rubs at the corner of his eye.

"I'm not a very good student," he says. "You're going to wish you could take it back after like the third night."

Nathan are you afraid that your photography is going to reveal your inner artist and people are going to start to have insight into your life and the way you think and that'll make you even more vulnerable than you already are because you really don't seem like the kind of person who is afraid of feelings and emotion and all that other crap that art evokes.

Lux

"I'm not a very good student either," Lux says, confessional. "Do you know what I did last time somebody tried to teach me something? I - "

a pause. Hold it. Hold it. Does the suspense rise? Is she trying to contain a smile? Fuck no. Why contain a smile? Lux isn't smiling, but oh doesn't a smile want to be a shadow again?

" - scowled at them. I might've also stomped," and she taps her fingers, tap-tap, musical. "So really, Nathan, I'm sure it will either be absolutely fine or just what I deserve. But only if you want."

A pause. Lux; some of that energy sluices away, leaving her serious (wist). "Don't you want?"

Lux

[WE PAUSE THIS, until which time Jamie's net gets not suck.]

Nate

Lux is definitely acting more buoyant than usual. Not so high as she would be were she on a cloud but the fact that she looks as if she's hiding every smile that wants to come unbidden to her lips is something even Nate notices. She isn't a stormcloud no but her intensity has always stricken him as focused. She wants something when she's talking to him.

She wanted a light the first time they met. The fact that she hasn't seduced him or fed from him and yet has an interest in protecting him has always stricken him as odd. Focused and odd.

Distracted and odd is what has his interest. And she can see the moment Nate decides that she has gotten laid or has a crush or something he doesn't want to hear about when he's sitting in the library with his books and nearly scowls himself.

And then that wist. Isn't she beautiful. Nate sighs heavy and turns more bodily in the chair towards her. Rests his arms across his legs. His posture is not demure. He is dressed in his business casual clothes still. Must have come straight from work or is on his way back to work.

"Fine," he sighs. It's a teasing sigh. He doesn't really feel beleaguered by this. "Yes. I want you to teach me how to take pictures."

Boom. Sorted.

Lux

"My heart just stopped," Lux drawls, and she wraps her arms around the top of the chair again, rests her chin on the wood. The Toreador (he doesn't know the name of her clan; just her description of it: the darlingest, the best, frivolous and useless, etcetera). "So where's the camera? Is it in your pockets? Can I investigate?" A pause. "Are you going to turn one of the closets in your apartment into a dark room?"

Nate

"Stay out of my pockets," he tells her.

Several of the women he's met in this city have not found his deadpan near-monotonous sense of humor to be humorous. It's hard to tell he's joking when the joke is delivered in a bar with classic rock playing on the jukebox and an air of barely-staved-off disaster hanging in the air. So many people drinking in such a closed space. Something is always bound to go wrong.

They're in a library. It's easier to hear him. He cracks a joke and then he turns in his chair to haul his messenger bag into his lap.

"I don't know if any of them are big enough," he says. "I'm thinking about moving when my lease is up anyway. It's really hard to sleep in that building." Ghosts. There's one that wanders the halls some nights. Lucy feels its presence and comes tear-assing through the apartment to either hide under his bed or underneath the covers. That wakes him up before the weeping and moaning can. "Maybe I can find a place that has a lot of closets I can sacrifice in the interests of art."

The camera came with a case. The case is new. He sets the messenger bag on the floor once he's found the case and hands the case over to her.

Lux

"Why, Mister," Lux says, all wide ingenue eyes, but mouth a firm line, corner of it curving up in a sharp smirk. Might've said more but he's talking about closets now so he's saved from whatever that smirk was herald of. The creature seems interested in his possible decision to move, and the sharp smirk returns at Nathan's tone when he says 'art.'

Then he's pulling the case out of his bag, handing it over. Lux decides to no longer straddle the chair. This maneuver is very interesting to the library tech who is over there; she's got long legs, but it's all in how (liquid measure [grace]) you use 'em, eh? Because she doesn't stand up like a normal person, but executes a pull a spin and at the end of it her back's against one of the chair's arms, her knees are crooked on the chair's other arm, shins against the table, and she's got one elbow on the chair's back still.

The camera case rests between her hips; the top of it bumps her thighs when she opens it; pulls the camera out and gives it a look. Nathan might realize that after a moment she does seem to be familiar with the make; a camera's a camera, but it's still technology, so takes a moment to remember. Remember, remember.

Lux checks for film, finds nothing, studies a couple letters scratched on the camera's body.

"What a thing," she says. "Just don't drop it in the shower. Anything else come with it?"

Nate

He frowns. Tries to remember the conversation that they had at dinner and what his father had told him about the circumstances in which he'd found the thing. A warehouse. In a box. Can't think of why anything else would come with it or whether his father had mentioned anything else.

Those kind of details are the details Nathan's brain picks up and stores. Not physical details. His situational awareness only applies to things moving fast and loud. Subtlety isn't anything he learned to hone in urban war zones.

"Uh," he says. "I don't think so. Why?"

Lux

"Mysterious Camera from the Truman days," Lux says, and she holds the camera up to her face so she can sight Nate through it. Then examines the lenses. She can see so clearly now each scuff, each mark, each fingerprint; difficult to look away. "Found in a box, decades later. No undeveloped negatives or notes or postcards or camera strap or," Lux frowns, consideringly. "I don't know. You said your dad's dad was supposedly a really good photographer?"

Nate

"I don't think I've ever seen any of his pictures. I never knew him."

Maybe if the divorce hadn't happened the way that it had. Joint custody or Theodore who was a very good prosecutor had managed to prove that Shira was not a loving caregiver and had fought her for them. These are details Nate was not privy to as a 13-year-old. His parents didn't want him to watch. He doesn't know if his father would have tried to get him turned onto photography as a teenager if he had been around. Showed him the photographs that Michael had taken and told stories about him. It's not out of the question and maybe in another universe that's how their lives went.

In this universe Nathan doesn't know if Michael Amherst was a really good photographer.

"My dad said he was though. So... you know. I believe him."

Lux

Her laugh is wickedness. "No pressure, Nathan." Then, flick to something less wicked: "I bet you'll take pictures that'll make other 97 year old whatevers swoon from the fucking glory. You know a good place to photograph at night?" Because any lessons Lux gives him will not be able to take advantage of the golden hour - and see, isn't there something that's almost - well, it's not wistful and it's not melancholy - there's just something. That was a rhetorical question. Partly a rhetorical question. "Downtown. Ooh, or the Red Rocks if there's a show going on, people's faces. Ooh, or down around East Colfax, you know, where the buildings are really mouldering. Ooh, or - "

Maybe he stops her; maybe she stops herself, clamming up to raise her eyebrows, like, oh, too much too far too fast?

Nate

Oh she's teasing him. Hah hah. One can't turn back the clock and un-become old but at least in his analogy he's still just a 20-something young man whose hands don't shake even when he's terrified.

He knew that about himself once. Never had attention drawn to it because no Marine will admit to his hands shaking because no Marine will admit to being terrified. But the thing that draws attention to it hasn't happened yet.

Right now he's sitting in a library with a woman who so far as he can tell has no reason to have cleaved herself to him like this. Who he will tell a powerful undead shadow-monger is his friend but if anything were to happen to him she would forgive the shadow-monger. Because she did it once before. No ill will for draining Nathan so thoroughly the kid ought to have gone to the hospital.

Nathan has no perspective. Unlike the friend who dragged him into this mess Nathan does not want to have perspective. He wants to learn about confluences and vanishing points and how to tell what's worth photographing and what isn't. He wants to laugh at the idea of taking pictures of coffee mugs and dust motes hung in sunlight on lazy mornings and yet as he thinks of these things he thinks of all the things Lux can't see anymore.

So he stands. Gathers up his books. He has to check them out and put the camera back into his bag but then they're off to the light rail station. As unburdened and almost-happy as she's seen him since before the car crash. Nathan is still a young man.

"C'mon," he says. "I've got a phone on my camera. Show me how to take pictures of people on the train without pissing someone off."

The next time she sees him this night will seem like a distant dream.

Flood and Harrow

Flood

When Flood wears his best to go to Sabbat holy ground it is doubtless those who don't understand him sneer at this monster who would hide in sheep's clothing, sheep's finery, sheep's wool and silk ties and pressed white linens like some man of industry. Like he really believes himself to be a man.

They probably don't do it to his face, though. They probably don't do it in the shadows, either. Unless they are very stupid or very brave, and maybe they sneer most where those two characteristics overlap. He has wiped away their sneers by surviving. He has changed them to wide eyed awe and teeth gnashing in jealousy by felling Camarilla lapdogs and returning from the Cardinal with a mandate.

Flood has his reasons for dressing the way he does. It is that he enjoys it. It elevates his mood. It sets him apart more than a mohawk or war paint might, especially in the modern times he awoke te. And while so many of the Sabbat revel in stripping away their human nature, the fact that he remains as he wishes despite them... Isn't that a greater form of rebellion?

There are subtle nods to the old traditions of the Sabbat in his dress. No overturned ankh or crucifix to buck humanity's conventions, though, only the light purple windowpane pattern laid out in thin geometric lines on his grey wool suit. The flair of a pocket square, a similar shade a lavender, folded into a tumultuous sea of points on his breast like a soldier's medals. His tie?

Black and folded into a fat knot around his neck. No need to overdo it.

This is not his weekly esbat. This is not him seeking out his priest to drink from the cup Caine carved for his people, this is not him seeking out those who would call him ductus and be lured to do violent things and indulge in their predatory nature under his subtle direction, this is him seeking out a much older relationship. This is him seeking out one who shares the blood of his line, the line of his sire, Garo, and Garo's sire before him back to the Hittite of the so-called chosen tribe's legend. Another freed by that blood from the mastery of others.

And one he had last spoken to very harshly.

Flood does not ask for Paige. Flood moves through the shadows seeking her out quietly. To ask or demand her presence might only further sour their relationship. This is his penitence. This is his show of respect. This is Flood silent.

And her brother in the Blood continues to search until he finds her, returning night after night and wordlessly waiting, revolving his schedule upon these journeys of silent penance and contemplation, knowing word will get around.

“Flood's at temple more than an altar boy these days,” a chuckle.

“The Lasombra's lurking around more than usual,” a whisper.

“Mourners of Enoch? Look's like he's fuckin' despondent over it,” snide as can be.

“What the fuck is he waiting for? Someone to bite him open and see what he's made of?” That one might come with a bit of hesitation, but it comes eventually, along with the rest.

Paige Harrow

This is hallowed ground. This: pit of inhumanity - of monstrousness. This nest of tunnels - of metal: twisted. A snarl of man-made pipes and exhaust and stone. Hallowed, of course - because here darkness breeds. Here foulness breeds, too - some would say that. They'd say - this is a place where vampires are vampires are courageous are themselves are not snivelling cowards are reverent are reverenced. They'd say here is the truth. Here we are making the truth known. Here we will lick our wounds and prepare to inflict those wounds ten times over on those who'd take the Pit (this is a Pit - this temple to Caine to Caine's true childer to those who understand what blood is for [to be spilled] to be used) and make it a punishment. Here -

This is hallowed ground. Brent Orly. Gui Cavalcanti. Paige Harrow. They enforce this with an enthusiasm chilling even to those whose blood is already cold, don't they? And there are always shadows in the Temple. Shadows that are natural, fire-spun and dripping, but turn to something unnatural (oh, you poor darlings, more natural than you'd dream) at a moment's notice. Never any telling what is in the shadows. Probably a fucking Lasombra if not a fucking Nosferatu Antitribu or Malkavian Antitribu. Fuck the shadows, some of the Sabbat think. Fuck them, but they do not say it unless they are brave.

Just as they do not speak against Flood, unless they are brave. And foolish, and snide, and whispering, whispering. Angelo, ravenous, hungry, fanatical, he is one of the first to comment in a quiet aside on the prodigal childe's sudden devotion, but aren't there others? Aren't there?

And a whisper is a shadow's greatest lover, don't you know. They go together, more than silence and shadows, because shadows are already silence. They can't muffle it any further: can't control it.

Here is Flood, seeking his sister-by-blood, seeking one who has in her veins what he has in his, close-knit, connected, he is in her, and she is in him, what is in him is in her, what is in her is in him, and perhaps there is something of sympathy there (no), perhaps it is magnetism, blood calling to blood. He has not always been alone when he comes to Temple, not to take of the cup, not to lead. Once Katherine cleaved to his side, Madonna-still face and gravity, eyes as cold as the rind of frost on a glacier. Once it was Alain, more full of fire (hatred [spite]), less deliberate in his ways. Though they asked him what he was about they left Lasombra business to Lasombra. They are not filled with the Abyss as he is. They do not know it in the same way.

Here is Flood, seeking Paige as he has sought her, and sought her, and the last time they spoke it did not end well.

Here is Flood.

He is near an entrance Veins of Caine, where they hold games of instinct, when he hears it. First: the distant sounds of something, clawed and scrabbling, desperate - a break of bones, an echo, stifled, short-lived, broke - games going well (or poorly) for some one or some thing, and then a sob. A breathless, soft-as-feather sound, drift-to-ash, and gone, and gone, and it is a prayer, a last-prayer, drifts up to Flood's ear like candle-incense in an Italian Church drifts up to stain medieval frescos, change their colour, and in the wake of that sound something closer -

A woman's heel hitting the ground, staccato sharp but muted. Whisper, too. Shadow's greatest love: whisper - whisper of a woman's coat against hard tunnel wall. A quiet step, and then another.

He has heard her before she says a word. Behind him.

Flood

"My shadow knows yours," voice clear and strong enough to not just breaking his silence, but shatter it. It was never a vow. It was an offering. It was bait.

"Step into my shadow and let me step into yours, sister," and Flood does not know it's her, but he does. He is not certain, but in the moment he says these things Flood is certain.

It was bait, but it was never blood in the water.

"And this time, when we dance, I will try not to step upon your toes," and even if there is not sympathy, there is a hint of the genuine. His words are true in that he means every last one of them.

"If you promise not to try to lead," the caveat cast out to echo into Cain's veins and back. He gazes into the hollows cut in hallowed ground underneath Denver where too many Sabbat wonder if an unknown sleeps.

Or hope it only sleeps.

Once he has spoken Flood turns toward her. He gives her all the time in the world to move for vengeance if she will try to take it. Something in his voice says he trusts her not to.

Begs her to no break his trust.

Paige Harrow

Flood does not at this time find himself attacked by Paige's shadows. Flood does not at this time find himself besieged by Paige's strength. Flood speaks and he does not see whatever reaction his words tossed into Caine's Veins (echo [echo] swallowed gone) might stamp across his sister-by-blood's sharp-carved striking creatures. He cannot see if she is struck by them.

Until he turns to face her. The female Lasombra is a pair of baleful black eyes in a face that is pale as marble and as smooth. A striking sculpture of a woman. Black eyes that smoulder but there's no light there. Not even the suggestion. With this Lasombra, isn't it all smoulder. Crackle. Cackle. Look how sharp she is, how cutting. Paige. She'd be the razor-blade hidden in Halloween candy, the jagged edge on a safety railing that cuts, draws blood, poisons. Poisonous.

The corner of her mouth has carved upward; it would be a smile, were it not so malicious; were it not so gleefully cruel, not so mockingly lilted.

"Daniel, Daniel. What is this talk? Are we not bound to be one another's keepers? My sweet brother," that smirk, that smile, it curdles; so does the cadence of her voice, the dark glory web of it. Curdles even as it becomes caressing -- "I hear you've become quite faithful lately; quite diligent even!" -- then flattens.

"I confess I was surprised."

Paige Harrow

ooc: ahem. Change to: "I confess I was surprised to hear it. So curious, considering our last conversation."

Flood

“I have faith in few things, but you are one of them,” he begins. Empty flattery will not get him anywhere, but this is not an empty statement. It not only reveals why he has been so diligent in his visits, but that he seeks something he can only get from another power (higher or not). She is that power. It hints at these things without forcing him to speak them outright.

“Neither of us would benefit from a confessor, but perhaps both of us can benefit from curiosity: what it has reaped already, what is will sow,” an aperitif in the form of temptation. Something to whet her appetite for more. She has confessed her curiosity. She has shown its extent by coming here. Flood needs to capitalize upon that and seems to want to do so with some immediacy.

Who knows where dwelling in the past will lead?

Flood does not smile. He has no reason to. He takes no delight in any of this. His face lacks that malevolence, though. He is invested in the outcome of this, in where it will leave them, but it seems that in his mind what he has said of their last encounter is all that can be said without belaboring the point.

"This is a new conversation. Isn't it?" Again the question is genuine. She will dictate whether it is in the past (if only for a little while) or not.

Paige Harrow

He can see Paige looking closely at him. He cannot see a leap in her eyes as she takes the bait. He cannot see a flicker when she is suddenly moved, if she is suddenly moved, to abandon her ire. He can however see when she takes another step and then another, all swagger like mesmerism is a concept best described by a Lasombra swaggering nearer Flood only to rest her back against the tunnel's stone. Which looks less hard than she does, touch Paige's skin and find oneself surprised. He can also see her eyebrows loft.

"I'm waiting," she says, her eyes fixed (fixated) on his, and though there is no light in them, they burn with something like vivid, exultant.

He is after all coming to her.

Flood

Flood's voice is all that comes toward her. He hopes it will be enough.

Flood has a story to tell. Flood has a tale worth telling. Flood is certain, in the moment he begins, that she will find it worth hearing. Worth truly listening to.

And that is why the male Lasombra is very careful about how he tells it. He crafts it out of voids, like the Abyss, and matter and light, which is what it hungers for. What he has shed light upon and what matters, at least by his reckoning. It wants to create nothing, so he gives it something to craft it out of.

Flood tells a tale and starts at the tail. He leaves out the head, because he hasn't seen it yet, and he leaves out the tick that sits on the beast, the one who had drawn his attention to it, the one who had made him itch for it. The metaphor doesn't work here because this is a black viper he tells a tale about. It's serpentine.

But he never mentions Jack. No, Flood crafts the tale, and with it he settles on some points: his known influence in industries that might've drawn his attention to these movements. Might've piqued his interest without a Nosferatu of the Camarilla whispering in his ear about it.

The construction site, quiet upon the Sabbat's coming, and the weed that had grown there. A lone delivery, but he leaves out the comings and going of a certain cab company. The legends behind that weed from their Iberian stronghold. The church(es) and the Father that seem to want or already have influence over that land. The man who developed it, Jonson of the Dry Denver Jonsons, and the man who manages it, Phil Lang. The bones of Caine and the word being stopped. Dammed up? He's not sure. Disturbed, in any case, and then on he goes on.

What starts out as a tale about a Gehenna cult, like what might be culled out of some vampiric newsletter or newspaper in another world, just the facts, ma'am, but then he moves on to a more visceral story.

And then Flood pauses. He leaves it there for now, because this story had gone on, become one he could tell first hand about a cab company and a cab driver, but before he does he is taking her in. He is trying to see if she had already had an inkling about some of these things, because there had been a woman with that man who was called Caravaggio.

And who knows who that woman was?

Siblings fight. Siblings fight for the affection of their Sire (is that not what Caine learnt to his cost?). Siblings fight for supremacy. Always a supplanter. Flood's sister-by-blood does not take her coal-black and snapping, like a trap, eyes from Flood's, though he will detect a faint narrowing of them as he goes on. Leaves out. Does she know? Do his words touching as they do upon a tangled web the spider nowhere yet to be seen call some part of his widow-maker black-hearted blood-sister out? He does not know. He cannot tell. Her eyes narrow faintly but that could be because whatever kindling keeps the darkness in them burning has just snapped, fallen, sent off up sparks. Her eyes narrow faintly but that could be in concentration, could be because, though he is coming now to her, she is envious of his diligence. Her eyes narrow faintly but that could be because she is absorbing his tale. Because she knows nothing, but sees that he is leaving something out. He cannot tell. But this:

That phrase which the Nosferatu (old partner [old crimes (now new ones)]) used that so snared him causes a reaction in Paige. The bones of Caine. The word being stopped. Dammed up. There's a pulse (venom) and her eyes widen and stay wide, and now her attention is riveted. She is no longer leaning against the wall so coolly, but leaning toward Flood to hear the rest of the story - if there is more. There is in her a bacchanal urge: to the hunt.

And as this happens, the shadows do shift for more dramatic effect. Cutting across the tunnel, pooling at Paige's feet and slipping back up against the wall, a density that peels itself from a flat dimension and makes itself a presence. A nightmare, certainly.

But not to these. They are the same.

Paige Harrow

ooc: hmm, jove. There should be a line between "to the hunt." and "And as this happens," and that line is: "This he can tell."

Flood

Flood

The shadow comes and the display demonstrates that Paige had come prepared for something, had been dancing with the Abyss as her partner before Flood had come to cut in, and though he wonders if this is simply her modus operandi to have a host of such darkness attendant to her whims... Well, coincidences become dangerous if you discard them too casually.

Flood manages to hold Paige's now-wide eyes and as he winds down that first part of his story decides to hold his tongue. Whether he is or isn't a step ahead, he refuses to take a step back or give up more ground than he must to get what he came her for.

And those unspoken revelations? They could serve to further triangulate her place on the board he has laid out.

"You can understand my concern," because it must be worded as a statement, "and see why I thought you might be a good sounding board for this venture," again too firm to be a question.

As the font of information dries up he looks at her and finally his eyebrow raises. He expects her to continue participating in this conversation.

Paige Harrow

The font (the flood) of information dams up. Paige leans back into that darkness and it makes her more cutting a thing than usual. Look how it throws into relief her cheekbones. Look how it attends the curl of her mouth. Not a smile at all. Not pleasant - the beginning of a sneer, until whatever she is thinking about causes it to fade. Then deepen (vibrant [glorying]). Then fade again.

"Oh my Daniel, I believe I do," and sultry as her voice is, thick and clotted as her voice is, strokable and dark, there is a touch of gloating. Even that it is diminished - a little. Her eyes are still wide with interest. "As diligent as you have been in this Church for a handful of nights, it has been an age," a cackle, amused truly, "since you've heard the priests intone - has it not? Even decades."

Firm, suddenly. "Will you not offer me your arm while we walk further?"

Into the Temple's heart, envisioned by her mad pack-brother prophet.

Flood

The Temple's heart: The veins carry its darkness elsewhere so that it wells up from the very ground. Saturates the city. Gives them someplace to bathe in their baser natures. Here, though? It purifies it with flame and then pumps that crude-turned-refined elsewhere. Fills the cup of faith of those who come to it and allows them to carry it out into the world to toss like the contents of a fire bucket to stifle and consume this city.

That is the ideal.

This is the reality.

It is a place for transactions. For allegiance and alliances to be forged or melted down for scrap. Paige wants his arm. This is another demand tacked on to the trade he has yet to fully negotiate. He has a choice and he takes the dangerous one in offering it, crooking his elbow for her to hold in her grip and lead him off.

Paige had never promised she wouldn't try to lead.

"A long time, but never long enough," he answers like the echoes might haunt- no, not haunt. They irritate him. Like wasted time before he had heard a true sermon from their sire.

Paige Harrow

He goes for the more dangerous option. Paige takes his arm. Her grip can be as strong as his (or nearly), this he knows. But she does not clamp down on his cold flesh with her own as if a vise. They walk. Her heels do echo. They are Lasombra and Lasombra are elegant. Lasombra reign truly in the dark. And it is dark here, in the Temple's heart. Dark here, in their hearts. Black. And this time, when we dance...

He expects her to participate in this conversation. Paige expects him to make it worth her while. Caine's Bones. Piqued her interest: but too much? Enough to involve herself?

If she's not already involved.

She seems amused by his answer, but doesn't linger.

"So," with vigor, like a slap. His sister-by-blood is not languid. "Obviously you've stumbled onto a matter which concerns our Sect; perhaps our very bloodline." The snick of a smirk, there's that razor-blade poison-cut again. "Does the weed remain or is it what's causing your cattle to spit their weedy cud all over and foul up the construction's works? Are you wondering if this Father is ours?" A beat. She seems to want [Dominance] him to say it.

But she is too intrigued to wait. "I don't think so, and yet..."

"His name does remind me of something."

Paige Harrow

ooc: darn it! that should be 'Does any of the weed remain and is it what's causing your' etc.

Flood

"The Cainite's bones, descendant. Or at least I think it was, perhaps the slip of my tongue was just me being hopeful," again, knowing what she does not know is just as important as what she does.

"Won't you tell me?" Flood does not slap back. The question comes softly, a request with ony whatever expectation she attaches to it now that she has said he has come across a matter of some significance to the whole of their Sect.

That meant this was also a matter of duty, something he could use to further pry these bits out of her, even if he is prying carefully.

"I wish to stop stumbling in the dark," and surely he doesn't mean this, would never admit to such a misstep, and see how straight he walks when he says it? How confidence despite chiding himself with it. He doesn't smirk. He doesn't sneer. He glides one step to the next and looks over at her down the unique construct that is his nose- if only thanks to his height.

She wants dominance. He shows her he's unconcerned with it.

"And I wish to take some ground instead," and hadn't she asked something about that weed? He ignores the question.

"But you are not that, are you, my darling Paige?" And he says it quickly. As if it will wipe the slate, the hypothetical, clean. But the claws what he says has? It has scored the backboard with its own sharpness. "No. Never you."

And he doesn't skip the next beat. Her earlier question?

She seems to want to hear back about it.

She presses back, insistent, and he returns with less than a trickle. But at least it is an honest one:

"I do not know. I suspect it may be what gummed up the works. Let us say that if I run into the Rocky Mountains you will know why and leave it at that, like a dead canary in a coal mine," as if it would be a burden he would gladly shoulder as a keeper.

They are dead, these two. They are creatures of darkness. They do not flush, or ever seek to, squandering vitae on such sheep's clothing; and thus Paige's skin stays as pristine marble as ever it is at that claw-scrape sharpness. They do not need to breathe, to pretend longing (or to perhaps even do more than pretend) for days when lungs were anything more than bellows for the verbal shaping of their will. And thus Paige's breathing does not give her away, how effectively that scratch of his drew metaphorical blood.

No; she is given away by the shadows. They'd been following them, Paige's shadows, following them to dramatically obscure their way, slipping artfully across the tunnel ground as if some fire flickered where there is in fact none. Just a glorying of darkness, the dark glorying in their passage, providing bars against any other interested ears or followers: the shadows can be sharp. Her control is impeccable: but she ceases to control them for a moment. The lash (whip) of her eyelashes hammers down against her cheek and her eyes scrape away (it's so quick). For a moment.

"His name reminds me of a story I heard from Adrian." A sharpening, if he does not know the name. A faux-sharpening, as she has been subdued, pretends otherwise but he knows. He does however know the name: Adrian - another Lasombra who came to Denver for the siege. "He said he feasted on a man from a parish and the man's blood rang in him like church bells," sneer, not for Flood, "silvering away the night. Poor boy, he said he couldn't quite get it up after that for nights." Her fingers run across the walls - no, across the shadows. Back to those. They react like a cat stroked. "He hadn't killed the man. When he went to find him again, later on, the man did call on a Peter of the Town. Not," insinuate, her voice; see how it gets in? Like fever?, "Peter of the Rock. Did weep after him when he died," and now, a bark of a laugh. Viciously, maliciously amused: "He was making excuses for his poor showing below."

This is far more information, directly given, than would be Paige's wont. She is unsettled, truly. The laughter has whipped the black of her eyes back up into a smoulder-thing; thoughtfully, she looks (again) at Flood.

"I thought nothing of it and barely do now, but perhaps it is interesting. I'm also half-minded of a scandal..."

And at this, she frowns deeply and sincerely. "I will see if I can dredge it up for you."

Flood

To dwell upon what his words wrought would be to gloat and Flood does not gloat. He heeds what they've wrung from her, more information that she would give otherwise. Rare as blood from a stone and he takes it with thanks. Steadily metered nods. Respect.

"Dredge and if you get mired, know you can always call upon me for a hand, if not always a meal," and his hand finally reaches across him. Had it come before, when he was in the midst of veiling threats and sending them to dance like images of belly dancing assassins, it might have been too much. It might have prodded at her beast and summoned a snap instead of what he can only read as a whimper (or what passes for one where Paige is concerned).

Now it comes and reaches across his chest to go where Paige's hand is on his arm. It pats, yule marble on stone from the same quarry, and then gives a reassuring squeeze before saying:

"Peter denied Jesus. It seems this Peter left his ward adrift, a feast for the wolves, as well, if there is more to that scandal. Perhaps he didn't want to make a martyr of himself," the allusion spoken in the context of conjecture. "The living often disappoint." Maybe he believes this.

It attempts to get across a very subtle point. One that might only be read with the right (again) context.

We are not like them. How much do you think I know, sister? And yet here I am: walking with you, talking with you. Offering you my help and asking for yours-

Flood's hand releases. He takes back his arm if she will release it. He looks to be off and to leave her time to contemplate her next move, fleeing the heart like an invigorated cell off to do its work.

Lesson #2: Euphoria

István

After the incident in the hallway on the first floor of the warehouse where István did promise Lux that he would not influence her actions again without her permission the place seemed as if it was an inappropriate place to teach another. Neutral ground would be better for them. Someplace where they would not feel their footing was unequal to the other's. Where they knew they would be safe come morning should they stay where they were until sunup.

Someplace where the drinks were easy to come by and the walls were thick.

They had such an excellent time the last time they were at the Oxford Hotel that István books not the same room because that would be difficult at the last minute but a similar room with thick light-blocking curtains and a large bathroom. A large television that does not interest him.

After they've slaked their thirst so much as they can ever claim to have slaked their thirst they meet back at the room. Card keys easier to care for and use than the metal keys he remembers. Not so much threat of their being tripped. István is drying his face in the bathroom when Lux returns. No blood stains it but that's because he did a thorough job.

"Fancy to be seeing you here," he says as he returns the hand towel to its place and steps out of the washroom.

Lux

Lux offers István the edge of a smile (knife's edge - isn't it lovely? As bright as Troy's gilded beams, charring, shadowed; as sharp as a star to the eye), and perhaps it is conspiratorial. She has just closed the door behind her. She is in her stocking feet, index and middle fingers of her right hand slipped through the strap of her improbable (architectural [art]) black shoes. They're heels: or wedges? They're so sculptured it's difficult to say: when she has them on it looks like she is walking on black foliage, just gilt: Dyana of the shadows. She tells him something in French, the conspiracy drifting out've her smile like smoke through a window, and then translates (?) into English - careless:

"Why, István," like his name's a treasure, "just be sure not to tell anyone you did. I'd hate for everybody to be seeing me when they're not even invited, huh?"

Lux tosses the shoes at the bed, in the general direction; follows them shortly, but just so she can flop back onto the bed as last time - though slightly different, huh? This time when she flops back, it's less of a flop and more of a languish, so that her head's hanging off the bed and she can look at the window and the room upside down and blood rushes to her head.

Blood does rush to her head; but it feels different than it might have when she had a heartbeat. When it wasn't sorcery wicking her into life; when she wasn't a beautiful curse.

István

And the man is still done up like a secured building. So many layers one would have to get through in order to find pulse points that don't promise vitae anymore and yet the vitae is still there. Old boy like him has strong-strong blood and to lock one's fangs onto his wrist or his neck would be enough to sustain a body for a long time. Not even to suck down his soul along with the rest of it. Just to feed.

A three-piece suit doesn't afford one much in the way of protection from fire or bullets or wooden stakes but from teeth. It would take some effort to bare flesh.

He's still wearing his shoes when he comes out of the bathroom with the light left on behind him and tucks his hands into his pockets. Traipses closer. She on the bed like a creature invited and not expected.

When István stands before her he is upside down to her. Peering curious at Lux from this angle and amused so much as he always appears amused by her.

"Yes," he says, "that would be dreadful, no?"

Dreadful. That's a fancy new English word.

Lux

"Get the curtains why don't you," Lux says, once he's stationed himself in front of her, peering down. She's not peering up; she's just looking up. Her hair is loose tonight, tumble, tumble, tumble to the floor; trail. Different shades, but isn't it interesting? How things are darker at the center. "And sure it would." A smirk; it's sharp, too. Sharp enough to cut, if you please, mssr István, make him bleed. "Are you making fun of me?"

István

The curtains. István knows right where they are and what to do with them and yet he gives them a glance askance as if they aren't his concern right now. Them or the eyes in the windows across the street. Up in the air. He's not concerned with who might be watching but she bids him close them and his lips cut an answering-sharp half-a-smile before he steps back from the bed.

As for whether he is making fun of her he waits until he is at the windows hiking the curtains into place to ask:

"Why in the world would I make fun of you, my gem?"

Lux

"I don't know; why wouldn't you? I hear it's awfully fun to make fun of people."

István

"Ah, see, I did not hear this thing. But the word 'fun' is right there, no? In the name of the thing?"

The curtains are drawn up tight and not a sliver would push its way in if they were to drop off before returning to their own safe places. This bed was a safe place once. Neither of them found themselves in combat with each other. No weapons to fight off.

István doesn't strictly need a weapon to harm another creature but they do come in handy.

He returns to the bed and he sits down beside her where she is still tipped wrong-way down the bed. Reaches an arm across her torso to plant his palm on the duvet beside her and considers her face. Her throat.

"I find it very difficult to be funny in English. No fun made."

Lux

That conspiratorial edge of a smile again - vibrance, you know; vibrance contained. "I suppose I'd rather be made fun of than made light of; or would I? I don't know, it's something of a trick, choosing, isn't it? But the name 'Lux' might give people a predisposition."

The art of talking nonsense is to talk it with sincerity; to speak it like it's the truest godamned thing, that you're being reckless with words, but like you know all along what you're saying is nonsense. C'mon, kids. Be drawn in. Compelled. He sits down and Lux lifts her head to watch him, although she doesn't scoot herself more properly onto the mattress yet.

She is studious; a scholar. "Hey, István." Intensity; sea-glass eyes all narrowing, focused. Fixed.

István

And he cants his head to one side. Curious and suspicious and her eyes can focus all they want but he isn't going to fall for whatever she's about to lay down for him. Or maybe he will. She has tried to walk him into one before or he has made it easier on her by starting towards one on his own.

They do talk nonsense sincerely enough. Perhaps he is expecting more nonsense though they're here because she wants him to teach her. To be her teacher.

"Hey, Lux," he says. Does not imitate her accent this time.

Lux

"I want you to tell me to do something again."

Her tone is opaque, too; or perhaps just intent. Because: fuck doing what people say.

István

[manip + intim: FOR A THING]

Dice: 6 d10 TN10 (2, 3, 3, 6, 9, 10) ( success x 2 ) [WP]

István

"You want me to tell you to do something."

Well. He did promise. This is permission if she is asking him to do this. Telling him she wants him to do this. Close enough. English evolved to allow for ambiguity.

"Okay." He removes his hand from the duvet so she has her range of movement back. "Dance."

Lux

Lux did ask. This time István puts his will behind the command, too - and why? Because he can. Because it nearly didn't work last time and he saw that? Tonight. Tonight Lux's mind is as sharp as ever it is: as set against - as intractable and willful. But it doesn't matter, being prepared. He removes his hand from the duvet and tells her to dance. Lux's pupils go to pinpricks. Her mouth presses into a firm line: resentful, rebellious - she lingers for a moment, glance troubled, jaw set.

Then she covers his hand with her hand. Uses it as a lynchpin when she sits up, swings herself up and off the bed. Does not let go of his hand: peels it up, pulls the Warlock up, eyebrows lofted, and strength kindled into greatness by blood used, blood pushed just so, and Lux - fine. Dance. Fine. She is not glaring at him, even if her mouth is pressed so sharply together, she's still intent.

Can't dance without a partner. "Reprehensible," she says, all a fall of light on venom lovely. "Aren't you at least going to sing?"

Lux

[Oh! -2 BPs to streeeeength.]

István

[char + perf: lol he might sound like a poisoned cat there lux. +1 diff because he's got no skillz.]

Dice: 3 d10 TN7 (1, 2, 5) ( fail )

István

When she hauls him off the bed he does nothing to fight her. Does not burn his dinner so that he can resist her fury. Because she was furious last time wasn't she. Of course she's going to be furious this time. Will bent against her. Anyone would be furious.

Risen by her power not his and he begins to lead her around the room. It is a strong compulsion and she will wish to dance for several minutes before the urge fades.

István never learned how to sing. Didn't see the point. There was plenty else he needed to learn how to do and besides if you don't breathe for long enough you forget how to control the breath and that's a principle part of singing.

He does not sound as if he's singing. He sounds as if he's yawning while speaking. In Hungarian. He has to be doing it on purpose. Out of spite.

"Reprehensible," he says. Agreement once he's dropped the act. "Little one, I can carry no tunes."

Lux

Lux doesn't require torturing herself with his 'singing'; she claps one of her hands over his mouth to signal yes, all right, cease. The line between her eyebrows isn't going anywhere. Lux you'd think would be an intimate dancer; somebody who knew just how to drape herself, knew just how to make herself an adornment - she's an awfully decorative girl. But tonight she's a rather aloof dancer; wonder why. Maybe she always dances like that with her partners- distant, cool, precise: a heart-break, Lux.

"You do fucking suck," she tells him, pleasantly, and then that's done: disengage; she doesn't push him onto the bed although there's a moment when it looks like she wants to; instead she rakes her fingers through her hair, dragging it to the back of her skull, holding it there.

István

Not after he just forced her to do something against not just her will but her very soul's protestations does István expect that she would drape herself over him while they danced in a hotel room four stories above the city. A mile above the sea. If she had danced with him of her own choosing perhaps he would expect some draping. Not now though. This was just a demonstration. Just more proof that she hasn't had much luck resisting his impulses once he's planted them.

Maybe if she practices. Like an instrument. No one ever mastered anything without failing several times first.

And when she tells him that he does fucking suck István suppresses a smile but cannot keep his brows from lifted nor the beaming light from his eyes. Aha! that expression says. I recognize that expression!

"The bad suck! Not the suck with which we are cursed." He taps his temple. "I remember this." Stands straight again hands behind his back even as she looks like she could knock him to the bed if she wanted to. Like she does want to. "I find this very curious that you do ask me to do this and then it angers you that I do it. I did say to myself, István Jákob, she is trying to trick you. It is a hardship, this being right all of the time."

Lux

Lux puts her other hand on her hip. Her fingers curl into her hair: a luxury. The shadow of a smile [blood and foam], sans conspiracy. Her chin ticks up an imperious notch. Carelessly cant. "But ván, darling, what trick do you think I played on you? What sort of trick is it to make you anger me?"

Then: the kissing curl of a grin; there is a shadow of caressing malevolence, sure. But it's just a shadow, sublimated. "Deplorable. What the Hell song were you torturing? Don't you know if you can't carry a tune you should hum like a gentleman?"

Lux might be angry; angered. But it's all impulse. Lux. If she believes in anything at all [and she's no Visionary; she's attracted to them, bespelled by them- a spell for them; but she's not a Visionary] it's that if you set your mind against something you can tear it the fuck down you can be unordered and uncommanded and the individual is all.

István

"And don't you know, my dear, that I am not a gentleman?"

Teasing still. If she's still angry he is still entertained by her presence and her flame-lick reaction to the things his presence does to hers. Once she might have begun to think him always amused. Not so after that night at the warehouse. He would have turned on her if she had saw fit to fight him in his own haven.

The Tower still casts its shadow over him. He will argue until dawn that laws are constructs and the only just laws are the ones that are come about organically and yet. Their people did not come about organically. Their Curse was not something risen up out of nature. No one knows where it came from.

He was not a gentleman in life. He was the son of an almshouse physician and a midwife and through some endowment or another found his way studying physics in Budapest. He was not cultured and his existence was not charmed. All he has ever known is talking nonsense with people who believe the nonsense. Dressing well and combing his hair so people do not treat him as the dirt from which he sprang.

"I am a peasant, yeah? Peasants do not sing so sweet. They sing like sweat. Like beasts." A contemplation. He flicks his eyebrows at whatever conclusion he reaches. He reaches it in silence. What harm can humoring her do.

He starts to hum. No skill in it and no passion. He is dead. He's been dead a long time. Yet all of the folk music of his people has a haunted air to it anyway. Even the lively dances. This is not a lively song he hums. On an instrument piloted by one who knew what they were doing it might have been a beautiful song. István just hums.

Lux

Lux watches István without recourse to movement now. (Go ahead, draw her.) He says that peasants sing like sweat. Like beasts. Lux is about to say something in response, but then István begins to hum, and she says nothing at all. Watches. Watches and, after a second, after two, takes her hand from her hair, silk filaments all a-fall, a slow-tumble, the curve is a most lovely line, and she closes whatever space is now between, the better to unknot his tie. Efficient. Precise. Take it off. The collar will go, next.

"You're not a peasant," she says. Faintly mocking, the Ventrue she thought he was until recently: "You, with your brilliant family, your rock of the ages shadow. You're a Lord of the Night. Lord István who will be forever."

"Of course I don't really believe in peasants. They're like Santa Claus; once you reach a certain age, it's just silly, isn't it?"

István

And he knew before he even stepped foot on the property that Lux intended to drink of his blood this night. She was not joking when she said she wanted him to be his teacher. Though she mocks and she jests and she goads that isn't something about which she would joke. Or if she would then István has not figured this out about her yet. But he knew coming here tonight that she had not been joking.

They were here last to catch up. Figure out how they would talk to each other in person when all they were used to was communicating via written correspondence.

István stands still as he always stands still but his stillness has a purpose now. Memory returns with less difficulty later when one is actively observing the events. His eyes follow her hands as she works the Windsor knot apart. Come back up to find her face before she starts in on the buttons of his collar.

Half-smirk at the designation. Lord of the Night. Not a peasant.

"What else do you not believe in?" he asks. "Hmm?"

Lux

He could cut his wrist and bleed into a cup. Does the Oxford Hotel provide glasses to its guest? He could do that instead. Lux doesn't suggest it. Doesn't Lux know her way around a shirt-buttons? Does. Unbuttons the collar. Steps forward to make him step back too. To knock him onto that bed as anger promised mere moments before: it's not anger now, though - nor is it human. Deliberate. If he does resist, perhaps she will use force. Perhaps instead unbutton his jacket. Get rid of it. She's sick to death of men in suits. Where's a guy in a teeshirt when you want one?

"Lords," she says. "Santa Claus, but I said that already. I don't believe in mirrors; barely believe in good whiskey; have failed to believe in the sneaker. I do not believe that there is a difference between desire and beauty and the human spirit."

"I don't believe in kings, either. Or injustice. Or that everyone can get away with wavy hair."

István

No he does not resist.

If she decides to use force anyway if she decides to unbutton his jacket he does not resist that either. But the bed is large and neither of them are large. He takes a step back and it is not an accident that he drops back onto the bed. Does not loll across the bed as Lux did earlier.

The creature Lux has chosen as her teacher does not have submission woven into his nature. His submission is just as deliberate as her force.

If she does not unbutton his jacket then István does it for her. Shucks the thing down off his shoulders and tosses it aside so blood will not splash it later. Not one of her humans feeling the anticipation before her lips hit his. No signs of arousal because he is not aroused. He is watching her and sharp but he is not caught up in a wash of hormones.

"That was more than seven things," he says. Mild observation. He did not specify that it should be seven things. He never gave her the seven things in which he trusts either.

She has to remove a waistcoat before she can get to his shirt. No wonder she thought he was Ventrue for so long.

Lux

Lux is not hurried. That's important. Lux: if she's going to drink another kindred's blood -- she wants to savor it. Lux: she wants to feel it. She wants to feel the texture of István's waistcoat and how cold its buttons are. She wants to hold one of the buttons on her tongue and let the edge cut her. She wants the fun of unwrapping a gift: so she takes it -- the fun. He isn't one of her humans, but so what? Off with the waistcoat. Off with the shirt.

If she's going to drink another kindred's blood.

"Are you sure? I don't believe it was," Lux says, waits a beat. And then an impulse-driven smile, compass-needle tugged; sublimated radiance, see the shadow of it?

"And if it was, I don't believe in Mathematics." Now she is just needling him. "István, love," the smile leaves; it's smoke, replaced with more glass-cut intensity. "What do you want?"

István

His skin has taken on a shade closer to fresh-death if only because he has recently fed. Beneath his skin his veins are slack because his heart does not provide pressure to them. With his jacket cast aside the cuffs of his dress shirt are snug about his wrists and the waistcoat stands in contrast both in color and in cut. In purpose. A waistcoat provides another layer of warmth. Something else to camouflage him from humans who would otherwise learn something was wrong with him by the chill in his trunk.

Is he sure. She doesn't believe in mathematics. He does.

In this low light his eyes are not radiant. Their color tends to follow the wash of whatever is going on around them. Darkness makes them look darker. Rare that she sees him in full illumination but when she does his eyes are the color of water.

Her smile leaves and his eyes stop laughing.

"What do I want?"

Such a broad question. She knows what he does with broad questions. Now he puts a hand on her hipbone and tugs her forward. Urging but she's stronger than he is right now. If she decides to climb up onto the bed with him István will slide back so she is not so precarious in her nearness to the edge of the mattress. Get rid of gravity at her back though she does not believe in mathematics.

"I want for you to remove my shirt."

Lux

It wasn't meant to be a broad question, but after all, they have certain habits: ink-habits which have taken another shape here in the flesh-and-bone-and-blood. He urges her forward; Lux resists at first, because she wishes to look at István. Just look at him; the shape he makes, as dishevelled as she has yet seen him and yet not dishevelled. Then she follows, knees on either side of his thighs, fingers just below his clavicle, like to keep him down although she is not pressing or pushing. Lux finds his skin, enjoys the feel of it because she is a hedonist or pretends to be so well it doesn't matter that she is not at heart a hedonist; finds the edge of his shirt; slides it off and he'll have to sit up if it's actually going to come off. "But what do you want after? Later?"

István

István

He is not of her clan. Never in all of her nights would she even suspect that he was and yet he does not deny her her wish to look at him. No idle arrogance or narcissism. Their kind spend their time hiding from light and hiding from humans and hiding from truths that would come back at them as sharpened wood.

An anarch trusting one of the Tower would be foolish. Yet more foolish things have happened before. Warning tales echo through the ages of children born of the same sire who fought across faction lines. Of lovers who were on opposite sides of the blade. No reason for her to trust him.

István does not have many tells. That sideways cant of his head when he sees something in a new light though. He doesn't realize he does it. Might be he's done it enough times in front of the Toreador now that he's going to have to take pains to curtail it in the future but he does do it now when he realizes. Nothing human in his eyes to give away what he thinks but they do tick to her neck. It's barer than his even now but then it always is.

When she slides the shirt back from his torso she does not find an undershirt in the way. He does not sweat and does not need anything to absorb the sweat. In life he was not a soldier or a criminal. He was an academic. He has an academic's build. His eyes go from her neck to his own bareness and then back up to her face.

One hand leaves the mattress first but then he sits up of his own volition to help her remove the second sleeve. Takes hold of her hand once the shirt is shed and brings her wrist up to where he can see it. Runs his thumb over the thin skin on the inside. Clinical at first but then the pressure gives itself up and it's as a feather running over the flesh.

If she has not stopped him by then he brings her wrist closer and presses his lips to it. No teeth but she can extrapolate what he wants after she's taken from him from the kiss alone.

For a change István is not trying to lie to her. There is a tenderness in the meeting of his lips and her wrist. It lies beneath the experimental air all of his actions take on as if he's just doing what he's doing to see what will happen. He isn't just kissing her wrist to see what will happen. He knows what will happen. She is a sensualist and both of their senses exist in a state of near-constant loftiness as if to boost the deadness of their nights.

Their kind lost their right to feel normal sensations and feel normal emotions when their sires came to lay a claim on them. To damn them.

István thinks of her in a positive regard. But he wants to feel fondness for her. Actually feel it and not just think it.

Lux

István is sitting up, holding her wrist to his lips. Lux is straddling his lap, watching him without once blinking. He'd had to arrest a gesture of hers in order to take her wrist and run his thumb across the skin. The gesture -- put his shirt on now that he was divested of it. Put his shirt on while he answered her. But this is all right, too. She'd rather abandon fabric however fine for such a touch while waiting for an answer, and then the touch became the answer. And that sudden understanding cant of his head; she'd watched it all and reaction was smoke, see, a stain of darkness in her eyes, a lick of shadow that didn't do anything to make their green more lucent than already it was. What she thinks she does not say and István isn't that in-tune with emotions anyway. What decision she comes to he experiences because Lux disengages her hand and runs both of her hands through his combed hair, undoing it in a wild scruff, and turns his head to the side with a relatively gentle thumb to his jaw. The thumb traces his jaw. Then traces the artery she is probably going to pierce. Finds his collar-bone again, and then his chest, even so his ribs, his waist, his academic's body, as if trying to decide just where - and so on: she wants to touch. There's a faint line between her eyebrows: as of concentration. She isn't looking toward his eyes to see what if he's sidelong looking at her or anything; he may as well not exist.

Who cares what prey think as long as they're caught. And he is prey right now.

Isn't Lux lovely even in this? And even if she weren't, there is something so intent about her in these moments, it is a suck in and of itself, a draw, a dark-star heart, you know, magnetism - she's not a Fall. She's the towards other things fall to - yeah?

There are other people having good times in the Oxford Hotel. Lux's good time right now is letting her fangs out and holding her hair back and finally sinking her teeth into István's neck. The pulse-point that isn't. He can feel the pain of it but the pain's not just any pain it's accompanied by something so exquisite. Ecstasy. They've given that name to a drug but it's become they don't know. Ecstasy, something to reverence. The Kiss isn't fair. István was right to be impressed by René escaping it because there's no way to escape it if you're a mortal and even most Kindred cannot do anything except allow the experience to possess them. Ecstasy, you know. And agony, but it just feels so good -

Lux makes this first drink last for a long time. Takes slowly, makes some little wondering and intent noise once. He can feel the wound licked close just so she can tear him open again and, before pressing her open mouth against, watch him bleed, catch a rivulet with her fingertip, gaze at the stain, breathe in the moment.

The good suck, eh?

And when she is done, done with his throat, Lux sits back and licks the side of her thumb and then sucks on her fingertip like his blood is a dessert, savors that too, eyes finally closing happily. Lux holds her thumb between her teeth for a second, before leaning forward to kiss István on the mouth. The couple two doors down are celebrating their tenth anniversary; they're watching a movie. When Lux kisses the Tremere, his blood is laced between her teeth, her tongue's coated in it.

Blood, blood, blood:

Euphoria. More.

[István! -6 BPs.]

István

Combed and cleaned up as he tends to be István presents himself to the world as a mannered man well and well-off and judging his age is near to impossible. His hair is dark blond and his eyes are alight in the wonder he experiences at the world around him and sometimes he smiles or smirks or goes so far as to laugh and that is when he looks of a particular age the most.

Not until Lux musses up his hair does his youthfulness in death bubble up. His hair was not so long as to require shearing every night to keep this up but long enough that the comb calms it. Product helps give it a new shape and as Lux musses it he looks like a young man in the prime of his life. No older than 30.

He submits because he wants to submit. She looses no power on him that will make him sit still while she sits astride him and examines his body before she leans over him. Never has anyone leaned over him like this. 150 years gone since his sire dragged him across.

When he tightens his hold on René it does not do this to him. René does not have fangs. René does not Kiss. Whatever he and René do is between the two of them but René knows well that this is more pleasurable than anything else in his mortal experience. He wants to live though.

This first time lasts. And it can last. He is an old and powerful being. He has fed this night. He does not writhe and gasp beneath her. Does not go into the same powerless throes that a human would. Yet he does feel something. He feels a euphoria he hasn't felt since he died. And Lux can feel when the first shudder of reaction goes through him. A lash of rage at first followed by a slackening and an acceptance.

When his eyes roll shut she cannot see it. But she can feel and hear the moan that comes out of him. Surprise and curiosity and pleasure beyond pleasure in the sound. Knows the pressure of his hands as they clutch her nearer. Knows that coloration to his eyes when he gazes at her when she lets him go. Not gasping or shuddering to catch his breath. He hasn't breathed in over a century.

She doesn't have to lean forward on her own in order to find his mouth. Not a reflex for him but it feels as much an impulse after that as anything else would be. He kisses her hard at first and then deep and when their tongues meet in the midst of it he tastes his vitae in her mouth and a ripple goes through him again.

They kiss for a long time. Near as long as she was bent at his throat. István is the first to disengage. Not because the night is over. Because he is kissing his way from her mouth down her jaw. Brushing her hair back off of her shoulder off of her throat. Kissing the thin flesh there to test it before he unsheathes his fangs.

Just before he buries them there an arm slides around her lower back. Latches her to him. He drinks of her.

Lux

[Hm. I just act like I totally give in to sensation, right?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN8 (2, 8, 9, 9) ( success x 3 )

Lux

Let us be frank. Lux never wants to submit. Ever. Even now. Lux laughs one of those shadow falling on silk sort've laughs (enjoyment) when István kisses his way down her jaw. He can feel the vibration of it against his lips. Lux liked the way his eyes looked after she let him go. Liked the way he shuddered when he tasted his own vitae on her tongue. Liked the way he kissed her. Liked digging her nails into his skin hard enough to draw more blood even if the marks'll heal at once. Feels alive on that old blood of his. Enchanted. Once he slips an arm around her lower back to latch her nearer, Lux: tension whispers through her shoulders, even as she wraps her legs around the Tremere, so, to help them be: so close, and the buttons of her tunic will leave little indentations on his skin. Angles her head to the side, not helping, because she doesn't want to help; frustrating, because she wants to be frustrating. Oh, what? Not that way? This other way? That makes my hair do what? It's in the way again? Oh?

The creature would laugh again, too - but his teeth turn the laughter into another sound altogether. Lux tests herself. How good it feels. Tests herself, tension in her hands, could she fight if she wanted to - ? And she could, so she lets herself be swept up in it - his mouth on her throat her blood in his mouth and if it is ecstasy to take it is ecstasy to be taken from. Bliss, again: oh, how she wants him to drink her forever.

She didn't drape over him when they danced; she drapes over him now.

István

To tell a desert-exiled man to only take one sip when the entire cup is before him is not at all like each drink an undead creature takes from his victim. That compulsion to drink to the last drop of life-fluid still there but István is not exiled. He is not starving.

She drank of him deep and she drank of him such that it would have killed a human. Would have sent a neonate careening towards if not overshooting frenzy. He does not lose himself to it that he could not fight back if he had to. But the novelty of it. The feel of her thighs and her lips her fangs. Her fingers.

For all she knows he died a virgin. He never talks about his life. It was so long ago. Easier to remember a passing dream after the light has scrubbed it from the mind.

Frustrating she is but István is patient. István is content to brush back her hair on both sides. To trace a finger along her dead artery and bite without pressure at her jaw to bid her stay still. She does stay still. Giving herself over to him without giving in.

He does not cannot take from her what she took from him and yet he does draw it out. Drinks slow even if he does not drink deep. Takes no more from her than he would from a human woman and runs his tongue along her wounds to seal them up again. Buries his fingers in her hair and rests his forehead against her jaw.

"Drágaságom..." he calls her. His tone warmer than she's ever heard it.

Lux

Silence at first.

And then Lux does laugh again, though it's barely more than a scrape of a chuckle. "Don't be cruel." Longing for things. "I don't know what that means. 'Bottoms up'? 'Cheers'?" - irreverent. Sounded as if she'd say another thing, but doesn't indeed. Indeed, does not; sinks back; leans back, but not perhaps before leaning into his hand in her hair.

"- enjoy yourself, sweet thing," she tells him, softly. Because this will not happen again. And there are hours yet before they need to go.
